Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – The Ballad Of The Sin Eater Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of those songs with way too much packed in for me to try to find all the meaning here. A couple of things:
A sin-eater is someone who symbollically takes on the sins of a dead person so their soul can rest, besides the Sin Eaters being Ted's old band, the name of a Spider-Man villain, and the name of several pieces of literature.
I think the part about Belfast is a reference to the strong reaction you get in Ireland (mainly the North) by expressing your armchair convictions about the Troubles, though people don't mind you so much if you're paying for the drinks. I'm not familiar with everywhere mentioned in this song, but all of the ones I know about are fiercely independent or nationalistic kinds of places/organisations.

The Mountain Goats – Love Love Love Lyrics 19 years ago
In case anyone else is wondering who Sonny Liston is, he was a boxer who allegedly put something to "blind" his opponents on his glove when he wasn't doing so well in a fight. (I might be the only person who doesn't know enough about boxing to have heard the story about Liston and Cassius Clay before, but I figured I'd throw it out there.)

Death Cab for Cutie – A Movie Script Ending Lyrics 20 years ago
Railroad, Holly, and State are all streets in downtown Bellingham, although I only mention State because musicforlife! mentioned the multiple meanings of the word "states."

Rocky Votolato – Without Eyes Still Seeing Lyrics 20 years ago
I don't have anything to contribute beyond mentioning that the three names in the first verse are the songwriters Bob Dylan, Nick Drake, and Blake Schwarzenbach. I'm probably stating the obvious.

It's always seemed to me that the song is about looking at things most people are afraid or don't know how to look at. There's something behind everything, and not many people even try to understand, but there are those heroes that risk losing everything by not only looking but attempting to show others.

Waxwing – All My Prophets Lyrics 20 years ago
I've heard Rocky say more than once that he (and the rest of Waxwing) firmly believe in the power of music to save people's lives. I think this song has something to do with that.

Jawbreaker – Bad Scene, Everyone's Fault Lyrics 20 years ago
I can imagine someone telling this story in these exact words the next day. ("Hey man, what'd you do this weekend?" "You know, I went to a party last night...")

Jawbreaker – Shirt Lyrics 20 years ago
Some of the lyrics from the live version are different from the version on the Dear You re-release.

This song has always just seemed like a silly, happy little "in love" song versus all of Blake's sad songs. I mean, "you're like a toothpicked teeth... mintiful"? I love it, it's fun. It seems like he was just reaching for some way to describe this person who makes him really happy (you're on my face / you're on my lips / and it shows / I should be happy and I am) and ended up with all of these sort of goofy comparisons. This song always makes me smile.

Diesel Boy – Punk Rock Girl Lyrics 23 years ago
This is a Dead Milkmen cover. Some of the lyrics are messed up but I don't feel like pointing them out. This song rocks.

Sham 69 – If The Kids Are United Lyrics 23 years ago
I think they were trying to say that British punk is good, not that they have British punk "rawk" pride or anything...

Isn't this song about heroin?
