Having just moved to birmingham for Uni, I listen to this song whenever I feel shit. It's an incredible portrayal of homesickness. I love the way Soupy explores themes without ever directly naming or addressing them. |

I think, with the exception of "find a way out for when shit gets bad", the fact that "well Jesus Christ, did I fuck up?" Is the first time that Soupy swears on the album really enhances the desperation in the song. It's also just so terrifying really; Soupy just bares his whole fears open in one line, and I'm certain I've screamed along with it more than once... WELL JESUS CHRIST, DID I FUCK UP?! |

This is only my personal interpretation here, but I have an odd feeling he's kind of expressing his disbelief towards Pete Wentz's 'honesty' in his lyrics: "Hear you got your troubles or so I've been told Maybe just a couple but I'm not quite sold" -obviously everyone hears about Pete's problems but Patrick isn't quite convinced. "All my friends go to bed dreaming up a reason they should weep" -he feels like Pete kind of dreams up why he should be depressed in the way he is. "And all my friends go to the ends of the earth for secrets they don't wanna keep" -Pete acts like he doesn't want to have these 'secrets' but tries so hard to make them for himself. "Well, this is my confession: yes, yes This is me confessin': god bless The sad and selfish--stay helpless" -here he is confessing - the sad and selfish (Pete acts so depressed but is a massive media whore) stay helpless (it's not that you can't be helped, but you won't let anyone help you). Anyway, not really an in depth interpretation but this is what I always think of when I hear this song, maybe it reflects the fall out (hey hey) between Pat and Pete. I'm a massive fan of Fall Out Boy and Patrick by the way so please don't think this is some personal attack. |

Well, my interpretation is that Pete Wentz wrote this when he and Patrick got back together to write; it's about how Pete feels like he's only valued when he's with Fall Out Boy, and how he just wants to be with the boys, regardless of where they're going or what they're doing. “I don't know where you're going, But do you got room for one more troubled soul” “I don’t know where you’re going” suggests that he’s not quite sure where the musical direction of Fall Out Boy is going, or even where each individual project is going, but then “do you got room for one more troubled soul?” suggests that, despite this, Pete just wants to be with them; he’s known for being a troubled soul, and he feels they are too, as the words “one more” connotes. “I don't know where I'm going, But I don't think I'm coming home” A similar theme, “I don’t know where I’m going” suggests that he doesn’t quite know where he’s going with Fall Out Boy either, but at the same time he doesn’t want to do what he’s done before, “I don’t think I’m coming home”. “And I said, I'll check in tomorrow if I don't wake up dead” This line would be about him promising that he and Fall Out Boy would get together one day, “checking in”, if his own project doesn’t go off, “if I don’t wake up dead”. “This is the road to ruin and we're starting at the end” And this line is about how Fall Out Boy have ruined themselves, and they’re “starting again” as they liked to emphasise with the new album’s release. “Say, yeah Let's be alone together We could stay young forever Scream it from the top of your lungs, lungs, lungs” Personally, I believe the chorus is quite ironic, being “alone together” is in itself fairly ironic, but it seems like Pete’s saying that they all feel alone doing their own projects, and that it would be better for them all if they were alone together, and staying young forever is probably about how they were young when they started doing Fall Out Boy, and by doing it again, they’re staying young. “Say, yeah Let's be alone together We can stay young forever We'll stay young, young, young, young, young” Uh, uh, uh, uh-oh Uh, uh, uh, uh-oh Uh, uh, uh, uh-oh Uh, uh, uh, uh-oh “Cut me off, I lost my track It's not my fault, I'm a maniac It's not funny anymore, no it's not” This is Pete confessing that he didn’t quite want to go on hiatus with his side projects, as he “lost his track”, but it’s not his fault he failed (that he’s a “maniac”) and the “it’s not funny” part seems like he’s saying that he doesn’t want to be reminded of this failure, so please don’t go on about it. “My heart is like a stallion, they love it more when it's broken” This line makes me want to cry, to be honest; this is Pete coming to the realisation that, even though his heart wants to just be free from Fall Out Boy “a stallion”, “they”, meaning his fans, only love him when he’s writing sad songs like he did with Fall Out Boy, which is the first connotation of “broken”, but at the same time when a stallion is “broken”, it’s under control, and perhaps he only feels in control when he’s with the band. “Do you wanna feel beautiful, do you wanna, yeah” This line kind of makes me think that Pete is asking the band if they want to be big again like they were, “feel beautiful”. “I'm outside the door, invite me in So we can go back and play pretend” Again, he’s talking to the band, and begging to be back in with them, and he just wants to “go back and play pretend”, perhaps pretending that he’s happy with the band, or pretending that they are still young and stupid. “I'm on deck, yeah I'm up next Tonight I'm high as a private jet” However, despite the sad notions in the song, this line makes me think that Pete’s basically saying that he knows that if he and Fall Out Boy come back, ie “on deck”, he’ll be “up next”, and this feeling twinned with being back making music with his best friends makes him “high as a private jet” And after that it’s the same thing through and through. A very powerful song in my opinion, and the jaunty nature of the music really accentuates the contrapuntal nature of the song in general. I really hope they continue making music, and while this album didn’t live up to a lot people’s expectations, I love it, and I hope they can fuse this sound with their older stuff. |
