Billy Joel is a master songwriter. There’s enough ambiguity in the lyric to leave it open to interpretation. I think the core subjects here are vulnerability, honesty, trust, lust and desire. The stranger is something we can all relate with. It’s our innermost self that we hide from the world..and even deny ourselves. The stranger is the husband that looks at the woman with lustful eyes and denies it...or embraces it. But he does not like it about himself. The stranger is the bigot who hides behind the facade. He is the devil in us all. Mwhahahahaha!!! |
