| The Jam – To Be Someone (Didn't We Have A Nice Time) Lyrics | 12 years ago |

This song may have been Paul reflecting, pessimistically, at the state of his career at the time... The Jam's second album, Modern World, was a let down, and the fist set of songs for their third albums were soundly rejected by Polydor execs. Things were looking bleak, the tremendous potential that everyone felt coming off In The City was a memory then, and The Jam was also coming off a US tour where they were opening for, of ALL PEOPLE, Blue Oyster Cult (could there be a worse match up???) The band was nervous about their future, and perhaps Weller was noticing how all these people that were right up their asses when they were doing well, could no longer be bothered when they were in this slump. Another instance of Weller's incredible eye for seeing the bigger picture that most of us don't notice - commenting on a society that we are all to immersed in to see for what it really is. |
