Those aren't quite the lyrics on my copy of Lead Belly - they sound more like Mavis Staples version There's a recording listed by the Rev.Edward Clayburn, on Vocalion, in 1923, but I've not been able to trace it further Lead Belly is supposed to have learned the song as a youth in Mooringsport, but I'm not sure - it's not something you'd expect to here in Sunday School! The version I've got is accapella, with no information as to where, or when, it was recorded |
