| I'm pretty sure it's "when the leavin' is hard but you go now" instead of "that believing is hard but you go now." | |

I'm really surprised at how many people find the lyrics to be positive. To me it's all very paranoid and possessive and secretive and manipulative. The narrator's constantly trying to keep secret who he really is. "There ain't no cowboy in my hat" - There's a hero/villain white/black hat dichotomy. He's not a good guy. "It's not my flag up in the pole" - He's flying a false flag. He's not showing his true colors. He's not who he says he is. "There ain't no puppy in your leash." - He's not harmless or sweet. And of course the leak, runner, and spy are all killed for trying to reveal who the narrator really is. They're killed so he can keep his secrets. In the end the garden is grown by deception. |
