Yeah, love the show, the intro, and the song. Some great perspectives on here. I was reading a Reddit thread about it, and someone on there claimed that their history teacher said that the lyrics were actually a poem written by Louis XIV. God, I want to believe that, that would just be fantastic and cool, but I have not been able to find one shred of evidence that it's true. Anyone have anything on that? |

@[manci:30200] You're kidding me. Your written English is far better and more comprehensible that most of what native English speakers write in internet comments. |

I think you're onto something there. My only disagreement is that it is about a specific relationship. I think it's a broader statement about the state of interracial relationships at the time the song was written. I was an adolescent young (white) man when this song came out, and I can tell you, that unless you were rock star or some other type of celebrity that could get away with anything, an interracial relationship was simply out of the question. At least in most parts of the U.S., and definitely where I grew up. Simply, if you entered into one, you were genuinely taking you life into your own hands. When I read and listen to these lyrics, they speak to me of the general feeling (at that time) that a significant portion of the female population was unobtainable, and the struggle that comes with weighing one's personal safety against the dream/fantasy of what could be. Race/sex wise, this statement can go either way, it just so happens that the singer is a white man pining after a black woman. Quite honestly, I'm jealous of today's youth, their horizons are so much broader when it comes to relationships and what is considered acceptable in most places. Of course, I'm imprinting my own experiences and observations when coming up with this opinion, as we all do, but that is what this beautiful song means to me. |
