| I would agree. I love that the song seems so innocent when you first hear it, without listening to the lyrics. I certainly hope that the description you provided is the correct one, it is what I've thought of the lyrics as well. Although I originally thought of cocaine as the drug being sung about, but this seems quite unlikely because of its unpopularity in the 60's. | |

And can't help but thinking that parts of the lyrics are about some sort of drug experience. "Did you see the lights As they fell all around you Did you hear the music Serenade from the stars Wake up, wake up Wake up and look around you We're lost in space And the time is our own" Seems as typical lyrics revolving around hallucinogenic experiences. Lost in space (well yeah) and the time is our own (loss of time orientation during hallucinogenic trips). I am not aware of Mr. Miller's habit of drug use during this time, but it seems to me that this entire album (at least the first five songs) is quite spacey and it wouldn't surprise me if some LSD or similar was part of his life. |

| I agree. The whole song gives me a marijuana-vibe, the deadbeat summer that is spoken of is likely a summer spent in a cannabis cloud. | |
| Country Joe McDonald – Bass Strings Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Seems quite obvious what the song is about, an LSD trip. Not necessarily a bad one, though the speaker expresses a need to "slow it down". The whispering voice that says "LSD" in the ending confirms which drug the speaker is on. | |
