'You torched a Saab like a pile of leaves I'd gone to find some better wheels 4, 5 meters running round the bend When the government agents surround you again' the song is about 'dying young' (word play with 'diane young'). so this section of lines is about going against the law. Setting an expensive car on fire is a pretty great metaphor: it's essentially taking what society considers 'luxury' but then saying 'screw you' to the man and going against the grain. 'Out of control but you're playing a role Do you think you can go til the 18th hole Or will you flip-flop the day of the championship? Try to go it alone on your own for a bit' When people adopt that way of thinking, it usually comes off as if they're playing it up: aka a role. Can you REALLY live that way? Using a golf metaphor, can you make it all the way to the '18th hole' (going though life) without changing your mind halfway through ('flip-flopping')? With the last line, they ask of people adopting this culture to step back and think about what they really want without any of society's influence. 'Irish and proud, baby, naturally But you got the luck of a Kennedy So grab the wheel and keep holding it tight Til you're tottering off into that good night' this verse touches on luck, characterizing a person who claims that their Catholic faith is enough to keep them good from dying young. But the lyrics challenge them back by talking about the famous Kennedy family, who were notorious for their 'Kennedy Curse' of dying young, despite their Catholic upbringing. So the lyrics essentially say don't rely on luck: just keep on going through life with a strong head about you, even if you totter along the road. 'Nobody knows what the future holds And it's bad enough just getting old Live my life in self-defense You know I love the past 'cause I hate suspense' The song finishes off with Vampire Weekend suddenly getting off their high horse on promoting a live fast die young lifestyle. They question: what does the future hold anyway? Deep down, like a lot of society members these days, they cover up their insecurities about death and dying. |

I think so, I think he's worried his new album(s) won't be as good as the first... it's what 'step' is about too I reckon, http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107859452712/ |

‘Every time I see you in the world, You always step to my girl’ Everyone is always questioning and criticizing his music, ‘girl’ being another word for music throughout the song. ‘I was a hoarder but girl that was back then’ He was writing and making music but wasn’t showing anyone, unlike now. he was ‘hoarding’ his music. ‘The gloves are off, the wisdom teeth are out what you on about?’ The ‘wise’ critics and people are ‘stepping up’, ‘taking off their gloves’ so they can pick holes in him and his music. Referring I think to the back-lash vampire weekend received after their second album, for being posh, and publicly educated, detached from the real world. These were however, unfair, untrue criticisms and he asks ‘what you on about?’ confused and shocked at the rumors and their lack of substance. ‘I'm stronger now, I'm ready for the house’ He’s prepared for the criticism now, he wasn’t before. ‘Ancestors told me That their girl was better She's richer than Croesus, she's tougher than leather’ The older generation always talks about how their music has more substance, more longevity, and a ‘toughness’ in comparison to the throw away 1 hit wonder pop and dance songs of today. About how they are still good songs even now - they’ve stood the test of time. ‘I just ignored all the tales of a past life Stale conversation deserves but a bread knife’ He tries not to take influence from other, older songs, tries to be original. ‘stale’ old songs that are out dated don’t deserve a look in. ‘And punks who would laugh when they saw us together Well they didn't know how to dress for the weather I can still see them there’ The people of the time who liked punk used to laugh at his style/genre of music. But he knew punk music wouldn’t stand the test of time. Although the punk fans still think their music is superior. ‘Wisdom's a gift, but you'd trade it for youth’ Being an older ‘has been’ band, out of the limelight, is a good thing. But every band that has past it’s time would snatch at the chance to become famous and popular once more, to ‘go mainstream’ for popularity and record sales. ‘We saw the stars when they hid from the world You cursed the sun when it stepped to your girl’ It was better when he wasn’t popular and famous. In fact, it was a curse when the public (‘the sun’) got hold of us and made us big, or ‘mainstream’. ‘Maybe she's gone, and I can't resurrect her the truth is she doesn't need me to protect her’ He, in the back of his mind, because of the criticism is sometimes gets, doubts his own music. Maybe with every album he makes his music is getting worse? And he should stop trying to ‘resurrect’ his music because it will never be as good as it used to be, before he was ‘mainstream’. But he really knows that he doesn’t need to defend, or ‘protect’ his music from the critics, because he knows that the music should speak for itself. ‘Everyone's dying, but girl -- you're not old yet’ He finally comes to the conclusion that his music is still fresh, and still good. |

I don't want to delve to far into the deep meaning so basically i'll say, it's about sex.... 'my love it's very late, till morning comes let's tessellate' - it's getting late, let's have sex tonight. to put it bluntly.... :P |

it's about walking through the Southampton Common and the fear of being beaten up. about how in those situations your heart beats faster and your blood seems to rush faster: 'flood of blood to the heart'. It might be about a particular time he said something to someone which aggravated them to beat him up: 'I've poked a nerve, he'll slap me like a whale'. aka, s*** I've p***** him off and he's much bigger then me so he's gonna hit me. |

it's possibly about a first crush/love: 'I'm absorbed in your thinking'. And how he was confused about his feelings for her hence 'legions upon legions of craftsmen handmade my feelings'. suggesting they are delicate and intricate thoughts. he kept it to himself though I think as the lyrics say 'and you don't know'. I think the bear thing is just a metaphor, he was scared of revealing his feelings so he kept them inside, not leaving the 'chalet' so he was at no danger of being harmed by 'bears'. maybe idk.... |
