For some reason, for me the saddest line is... Aw, but I'm just dreamin', I ain't got no ride And the junkyard's a pretty good ways That job's about a half week old besides It'd be gone now anyway Don't know why it's that one that socks it to me. |

Hmmm ok, heres an idea. The songs got something to do with symbiotic relationships. The relationship between Pancho and the federales is kind of symbiotic. They let him hang around because the federales rely on him somehow. There wouldn't be federales without outlaws. Pancho is as much a myth as a real person. The federales need the myth of this honest and free bandit. Lefty is the poet who tells of how Pancho fell. Lefty needs the myth of Pancho also. And Pancho needs Lefty to tell his tale, and his dying words. The dust is in lefty's mouth not becuase he killed Pancho. They never met. But there is some residue of burden, because Lefty benefits off of his death, and his myth. Lefty spins the myth in his blues songs, but his life in cheap hotels is just a shadow of the clean and free outlaw. |

I think this song encapsulates fear of the feminine. Also, notice how he crosses a boundary in the song... >I watch her, I love her, I long for to touch her and then... >So I reach for her hand and her eyes turns to poison Like he crosses a boundary, by touching her, and awakens her fury. Seems the song is kind of about the tension between desire and boundaries. >Outside my window her ladies are sleeping >My dogs have gone hunting >The howling is through Whats that all about? Perhaps it represents that these guards are down, and so he thinks he can cross the boundary. But he can't. I'm reminded of the fool Tarot card, and how the dog represents guiding conscience. It's interesting the comparisons people have drawn to Lilith. Lilith left the garden of Eden because she refused to be subservient to Adam. From my perspective, this story seems to be about a woman who draws her own boundaries, and wont tolerate them being crossed. |
