| Windir – Dauden Lyrics | 3 years ago |
| I mean't to write 1700s to mid 1900s. Norway kept this tradition a loong time, and many places were only reachable by boats until surprisingly "resent." | |

| @[LaDiablo:44843] This is a solid translation, and the original doesn't have any rhyming words (tho it has a rhytm and "poetic feel" to it). The times described 1700s to the early 1800s were hard, and words were pretty direct and descriptive, so I would simply translate Likbør mostly directly to "corpse burden" (lik=corpse and bør=burden). It's the progression, as you mentioned) from the place of death (usually the deseased home) to the Church and the funeral. In Western Norway there were few roads, so it was often by boat. To lessen the burden (pun intended) tiny Churches were over time buildt in even the smallest of villages around the coast, since it was important to be buried in Hallow ground. | |
| Windir – Kong Hydnes Haug Lyrics | 3 years ago |
| @[megacell:44840] Your translation is correct. It's in my mother tounge, but directly transcribed from Sogna dialect (not in either of the official written languages). The clearing of the burial mound is describes as an unwittingly done act, so it might have been cleared by farmers for grassing pastures, or to build a homestead. Many of the Mounds are overgrown and blends into the landscape. Accidents occur. No mention of the date, so might be way back. If it was in the 80ies/90ies it would be (at least) local news and the state would have intervened. When I googled it all I found was the lyrics of the song, but I do think it's a true story. It's said that the spesific place (names of the surrounding areas are mentioned) has an eerie atmosphere that still lingers over the disturbed gravesite, and that folks avoid it. | |
| Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – Tupelo Lyrics | 6 years ago |
| It's about tornadoes ravaging the town of Tupelo, USA in 1936. Two of the survivors were five years old Elvis Presley and his mother. | |
| The Mountain Goats – You or Your Memory Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| The "you" he's referring to might be about the narrators father, mother or somebody totally different (ex lover?) depending if one see the song in context with the rest of the album or as it's own story. I always saw the situation as somebody locking himself up in a hotel to go cold turkey from drug and/or alcohol abuse, and aiming to face his problems head on from then on. | |
| Pearl Jam – Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| @[Untuned:22086] PS' Love both artists/bands. I just feel that this could have been written by both. | |
| Pearl Jam – Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| This is as close Pearl Jam has gotten to a Bruce Springsteen song. | |
| Frankie Laine – Rawhide Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| One time, humming this in the shower; I realized that it could be about women, and some restless, lovesick cowboy with commitment-issues ;) | |
| Massive Attack – Teardrop Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| @[IrishWxman:22085] For many, a spontaneous abortion *is* a loss. A loss of someone they in many ways already loved, and waited for. A unfulfilled love. I agree that the song song is not about the performance of a medical procedure. But if it is about *loss* (in general), grief after an abortion (spontaneous or not) is still a valid personal interpretation. | |
| PJ Harvey – In the Dark Places Lyrics | 8 years ago |
| I understand that most of these lines are (probably) about the endless repetition of the horrors of war, both through history, and the day to day life of soldiers fighting in them. I feel that these lines; "not one man has and not one woman has revealed the secrets of the world" could eighter mean that they are very, very young and haven't lived their to the fullest yet, but it could also mean that war is a great waste that leads to no revelations, and no real gain for anyone (be it humanity or the soldiers themselves). | |

| Johnny Cash – I See A Darkness Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I must mention that "I see a darkness" was written by Will Oldham (aka Bonnie 'prince' Billy.) Great artist! Even so great that Cash himself covered him. I feel that this song is well accompanied with another text, written by the mother of the late; great singer/songwriter Nick Drake. The Shell (A Skin Too Few) Living grows round us like a skin to shut away the outer desolation For if we clearly mark the furthest deep we should be dead long years before the grave. But turning around within the homely shell of worry discontent and narrow joy we grow and flourish and rarely see the outside dark that would confound our eyes some break the shell… I think that there are those who push their fingers through the brittle walls and make a hole…and through this cruel slit stare out across the cinders of the world with naked eyes they look both out and end, knowing themselves and too much else beside. |

| Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – I See A Darkness Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| It's not a Johnny Cash cover. Johnny Cash covered this song for one of his albums in the "American" series (wich consist almost solely of covers Cash did in tribute to other artists works he admire.) Bonnie 'Prince' Billy is one of the many aliases of Will Oldham. A great, and sadly, underapreciated songwriter. I love Johnny cash, but I also recomend looking into Bonnie 'Prince' Billy's music :) Cash did! | |
| Bruce Springsteen – My Father's House Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I guess the song works whether its about God or his father. Your parents will in many ways always have a Godlike quality to you. If they where/are good, bad or just never there; they still have/had a huge impact on your life. They are also the reason you're here today. I feel that the song is about loosing someone close to you, and realising that that person, and the times you had together will never come back. All that remains are memories, both the good and the bad. | |
