| that's my take on it as well.. people try to complicate things too much... butterflies are a rare and transcendent beauty in a disgusting and vile world that knows no compassion.. clearly the homeless person in this song can never seem to grasp that higher level of beauty or transcendence, so they float away like a butterfly as well. | |

you nailed it bang on.. I still cannot help but think of the junky mainline interpretation when it comes to the title evenflow.. especially in relation to how its tied to the butterfly metaphor.. makes one think of the butterfly effect after electroshock therapy.. either way drugs are used to control the populace and its all about the mooolahhh and shekel control by the overlord taskmasters... |

As most of the comments thus far illustrate, its about a homeless person, who lives on the street, that much is obvious and undebatable as to the meaning implied, but what is not so obvious and makes the song lyrics hard to interpret indepth is WHAT was behind him getting to be in this state of homelessness.. add to this the cryptic comparison between the title and central lyric EVEN FLOW and butterfly metaphor.. makes the song even more enigmatic... I like the interpretation that EVENFLOW is somehow related to mainlining a needle as junkies do.. but it could very well have something to do with mk ultra type reference where they use pharma drugs injected into people for mind control experiments.. where ELECTRO SHOCK supposed therapy was applied after pharma injections.. every person who ever underwent such horrors reported floating like a butterfly after one of those sessions.. hence even the hollywood movie BUTTERFLY AFFECT.. while makes an allusion to this.. I personally doubt eddy or pearl jam put this much intent into the song lyrics, but I cannot help but think of this stuff when thinking about the lyrics.. either way the entire song is about ALTERNATE REALITIES, the perceived one in ones fantasy imaginatory world and the REAL one we have to all live in, and when there is no harmony between two, disconnection occurs of course.. having lived on the streets for some time myself, its hard to not to understand the impact of pharmacratic drug barons control and MIND control over the impoverished slave world they love to control and keep under subjection.. I've seen schizophrenic men sooo lonely at homeless salvation army shelters, old seniors talking to pictures on the wall because they had no friends, their disconnection from society was so acute.. unless you've lived it you can never really understand what this world is about that Pearl Jam is singing about.. its really a NON song.. and a NON celebration the entire song and a clear inditement on the disconnection and disassociation of the real world versus the fantasy world more and more are living in every day. |
