| He keeps saying throughout the song "I'm not ready for this sort of thing". Its the same line but the meaning changes throughout. In the beginning its about being in love and towards the end its about being separated from the one he loves. He is not ready to love but he is not ready to let her go. He is "somewhere in between" | |

I don't know what it is about the line: "It doesn't bother me to say it isn't love because if you don't want to talk about it then it isn't love." It gets me every time. If you don't want to talk about it then it isn't love. Brilliant. I think this song is about being scared to love or be in love. "Anna" is scared to be in love but it doesn't bother him because he knows its love. She can say its not love but he knows that she knows it is, she's just scared. Something in a shade of grey; that's how he feels about her not loving him. He knows that she loves him whether she wants to admit it or not because there is always something in a "shade of grey"; its not all black and white. He knows that its not "all or nothing" which is why he is not "overly concerned'. Counting Crows has some weird obsession with grey. They mention it in so many of their songs. This song has to be one of their best. It's crazy how perfect these lyrics are. I can only begin to understand. I think I could write a ten page paper just on this song. Adam Duritz is an amazing writer. Amazing. |
