My interpretation of this song is based on that time, when Metallica made this album just after James left rehab...so it's something about addiction, not particularly alcohol, but 95% sure it is: "Wash your back so you won't stab mine Get in bed with your own kind Live your life so you don't see mine Drape your back so you won't shine" clearly means dont judge me, watch what you did and see your mistakes and sins before you judge me, live your life without judging others', and dont over shine yourself (remember holier than thou and King Nothing?) "Ooh then she holds my hand And i lie to get a smile Ooh then she holds my hand And i lie to get a smile" doesn't have to be "A Woman", but a family or a loving person...she holds his hand, as in trying to help him through his ordeal, but then he lies to get a smile (to deceive and achieve what he wants) "Using what i want To get what you want" Using what he wants, he's love for this "X-person, Family, or a Caring person (wife?)"...to get what YOU want, and YOU here refers to THAT addiction that he's suffering from...The demons that are ruining his life(this is way he was telling people in the first place, wash your back so you wont stab mine, not to judge him because he's ashamed of it and everyone makes mistakes) "Ooh sweet amber How sweet are you? How sweet does it get?" He's talking about his source of addiction and how much he missed it, how sweet are you, how sweet can you get, that's what normally you would think of after rehab or trying to cut that source of addiction. "Chase the rabbit, fetch the stick She rolls me over 'till im sick She deals in habits, deals in pain I run away, but i'm back again" this can mean 2 meanings: 1st, (which i think applies the most) James is the rabbit, and that person helping him is his care giver, he's chasing after him, "throwing him the stick" as in playing and spending time with him, again, rolls me over until i'm sick as plays with me until i had enough (i think). She deals in habit deals in pain, She,again, the person that cares for him, she, because of James, deals with habit and pain due to his problems/addictions. He then runs away, as in fighting with her over it, that he's ok and she is caring too much and bla bla bla, but then he comes back each day after he's "sober" again. 2nd meaning: describes himself as the chaser of the rabbit, with the rabbit being alcohol or the source of addiction...but cannot complete the other so i'm sticking with the first. "And she squeezes tighter I still lie to get a smile" she squeezes tighter, she's trying to help him more, but even though he still lies to get what he wants. "She holds the pen that spells the end She traces me and draws me in..." She holds the pen, for signing him in into rehab, or the pen represents a way of help that she's offering him, that spells the end of his demons/addictions/problems... She traces him, looks after him, tells him what she's gonna do and why, and then Draws him in, as in bring/lead him to do a certain action. which is to convince him to do what she wants for his own sake. then he ends it off by saying: "It's never as sweet as it seems" Amber, the addiction, the alcohol, the source of the addiction, is NEVER as sweet as you may think, and is definitely not worth the trouble it brings. I seriously have no idea how he comes up with this kind of lyrics...just pure amazing. |
