The first time I heard this song I knew deep down that this song, surely, couldn't be about a lover, even though it sounds like it. So this is a different way to interpret it. I think this song isn't about a lover, but torn between God and the Devil; good vs. evil. She wants to be with God because it's the right thing to do and how to live a happy life, so to say. But she knows what she has done wrong to not deserve his love, so is related to the Devil in that way. So, practically the Devil is in between the relationship of hers and God's; she's started to fall in love with her mistakes and accept that she is a bad person. So the song could also be representing her good side and her bad side. In the clip, she is being punished by voodoo and stuff, which is obviously the Devil's work. But in her heart it's saying that she need to go to God and her bad side is urging her towards good, if that makes any sense. So, what I think so far is that she is stuck between the Devil and God, her heart saying "Go to God", but her mistakes and society saying "Go to the Devil, you don't deserve God". But she finally falls and, so to say, God (the choir boys) catch her and perhaps repent her from her sins and become, I dunno, pure. Also in the clip, it shows Florence running away from a guy, which could be represented as the devil. The lyrics sound like that they are directed to either God or the Devil, as shown: You are the hole in my head You are the space in my bed (talking to Devil) You are the silence in between What I thought and what I said (talking to God) You are the night-time fear (talking to Devil) You are the morning when it's clear (talking to God) When it's over your start (talking to Devil) You're my head, you're my heart (talking to God) No light, no light in your bright blue eyes I never knew daylight could be so violent (talking to Devil) A revelation in the light of day You can't choose what stays and what fades away (talking to God, perhaps in doubt of his existence) And I'd do anything to make you stay (talking to God) No light, no light (No light) Tell me what you want me to say (talking to Devil, perhaps as in she's possessed) Through the crowded islands crying out at me (talking to Devil) In your place there were a thousand other faces (talking to God) I was disappearing in plain sight (talking to Devil) Heaven help me I need to make it right (talking to God) You want a revelation You want to get it right And it's a conversation I just can't have tonight (talking to God, perhaps refusing help) You want a revelation Some kind of resolution You are the revelation (talking to God) No light, no light in your bright blue eyes I never knew daylight could be so violent (talking to Devil) A revelation in the light of day You can't choose what stays and what fades away (talking to God) And I'd do anything to, to make you stay (talking to God) No light, no light (No light) Tell me what you want me to say (talking to Devil) But would you leave me If I told you what I've done And would you leave me If I told you what I've become (talking to God) 'Cause it's so easy To sing it to a crowd But it's so hard, my love To say it to you, all alone (talking to God) No light, no light in your bright blue eyes I never knew daylight could be so violent (talking to Devil) A revelation in the light of day You can't choose what stays and what fades away (talking to God) And I'd do anything to make you stay (talking to God) No light, no light Tell me what you want me to say (talking to Devil) You want a revelation You want to get it right But, it's a conversation I just can't have tonight You want a revelation Some kind of resolution You want a revelation You want a revelation You want to get it right But, it's a conversation I just can't have tonight You want a revelation Some kind of resolution Tell me what you want me to say (talking to God) Note: the Devil is said to have blue eyes Note: when it says talking to either God or Devil, it could also mean Florence is just referring to them (sorry I got lazy) So by looking at it from that angle, it looks like she stuck between good and evil and what she will do. In conclusion, her dark heart pushes her "off the building" in to the Church and chooses God. Sorry for wasting your time. Have a nice day! |
