The hometown and high school where Leigh Nash and Matt Slocum went to school had some deep secrets. There was a nephew of a Waffen SS member in Leigh's first grade class! Within a mile of the high school where Leigh and Matt went a Nazi rocket scientist and his astronomer wife committed suicide in 1998. By the way the high school was home of the UNICORNS and still is heavy on whimsy. If you can imagine Leigh and Matt occasionally in high school passing a house with a high cyclone fence mail box through it rumored to be an intelligence operatives house (rumor was correct) you get an appreciation for the whimy behind the song. |

On their Facebook page the band indicated that the headstone with the birth place of Yugoslavia was deliberate on the part of the band to show a further tradgedy. Australia took in a fair number of Eastern European refugees after WWII including many young men who had been conscripted into the Nazi military. Their was a large refugee Crisis after WWII Displaced persons fleeing the soviets. Australia wanted strong young men to help tame the frontier. On a personal note I remember this music video being in moderate rotation on MTV not realizing its relevance to my own existence a year later I was visiting family (uncle 2 aunts) half siblings and sister and law of my father and before I had even spent a night down under I was told my Uncle's labor contract had a choice lumber jacking or wrking the Blue Sky Mine. It was the start of an intensive history lesson over three weeks. |

| The song's rise to popularity occurred in an ironic time in the hometown of Leigh and Matt. A Nazi rocket scientist and his wife committed suicide May or June of 1998 under a mile from where Leigh and Matt went to high school. The rocket scientist had worked US military intelligence in San Antonio. Their was a nephew of an SS man (Latvian Legion) in Leigh Nash's first grade class who also was the nephew of a guidance counselor in both the middle and high school Leigh attended husband and wife Latina/Latino. | |

For the aviator the song is probably one of THE BEST written songs about aviation period....... The song speaks of the peristannce required to become an aviator......and the perils.... "Ice is forming on the tips of my wings Unheeded warnings I thought I thought of everything No navigator to guide my way home Unladened, empty and turned to stone " The actual flight sequence final verse sequence is just great good song writing the voice and keyboard it nails it....from an airplane pilots POV....as the wheels break ground the tension that had been built up is dissapated and the climb begins from fast tricyle to bird.....then the joy of seeing the earth not from a ground pointer point of view but seeing it the way birds see it....the blast of the band and the stratocaster.... yes brilliant arrangment... |
