| The Civil Wars – D'Arline Lyrics | 11 years ago |

This song is probably one of my favorite songs by The Civil Wars. Recorded on an iPhone or not, it just has this really heartfelt beauty to it. One of the best things about this song is that it uses the line, "That's how it goes". The singer seems to accept the way things have gone for him, not because he's moved beyond it, but because he knows "that's how it goes". Sometimes you get dealt a shitty hand in life, and there really is nothing you can do to change that. Also, "You always said you want me to be happy, but happiness is having you here with me" is another great set of lyrics. This entire song could be seen in two ways, in my opinion. It could be seen as a person writing to someone they had a relationship with who left them, or it could be to a person who had died. Either way, they don't know where to send this letter of theirs. This song right up there with Poison and Wine, and My Father's Father for me. I kinda wish more people liked it as much, but still, it's a great piece. |

| Florence + the Machine – Drumming Song Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
I look at this song as being about the desire the singer has for another person. Rather than having butterflies in her stomach, she has a drumming noise inside her head. That, also, makes the desire she has substantially less innocent. This isn't a little crush, this is intense passion. This is a feeling the will not be ignored. In fact, they are so strong, that the singer believes that the person she is referring to can hear the drumming/tell how she feels about them. There is also a religious nature to this song. At once point, the singer talks about going to a to church, hoping that the bells in said church will make the drumming go away. This can be seen as the person turning to religion to cleanse their mind of impure/sinful thoughts they are having. All it does, though, is leave a ringing in her ear. Perhaps said ringing is the religious doctrine reminding her that what she is feeling is bad. However, in the chorus, she states that the drumming noise in louder than the bells, meaning that her feelings trump whatever religious morals tell her that how she feels is wrong. |

| Lana Del Rey – Old Money Lyrics | 11 years ago |

Perhaps a song about man who, despite the fact that he's left her, still holds the singers affections. He knows that she'll come running back to him whenever he decides he wants her, despite the fact that he's abandoned her. 'Blue hydrangea, cold cash divine, cashmere, cologne, and white sunshine Red Racing cars, Sunset And Vine, the kids were young and pretty.' This part seems to be about the singer looking back, thinking about a happier time in her life, when she and the people she knew were still young. 'Where have you been, where did you go? Those summer nights seem long ago So is the girl you used to call the queen of NYC' The singer wonders where her lost love has been since they were last together, and thinks about how long ago that time feels. Possibly, she also acknowledges that she's not the same person she was back then either, by saying that the girl she used to be (the queen of NYC) is gone. 'But if you call for me know I'll come, and if you send for me you know I'll run. I'll run to you, I'll run to you, I'll run, run, run. I'll come to you, I'll come to you, I'll come, come, come.' Both of them know that, as soon as he rears his head again, she go running right back to him. In this case, love has blinded her, and despite the fact that he is hurting her, she will always go back to him. 'The power of youth is on my mind Sunset, small town, I'm out of time Will you still love me when I shine from words but not from beauty' The singer thinks about how, in youth, you can do so many things, and have so many prospects open to you. She then wonders if the person she loves will still care about her when she grows old, and only her words will matter. The last line could also be seen as a reference to the song, Young & Beautiful. 'My fathers love was always strong, my mothers glamour lives on and on. Yet, still inside I felt alone for reasons unknown to me.' Although she had the love of two parents, she always felt alone inside, and could never figure out why. 'If you change your mind, I'll come, come, come.' Whenever, or if he ever, changes his mind and wants her back; she'll always be ready to go to him. 'The kids were young and pretty.' Another sign that this song is about a person thinking about the past/their youth. Back then the people she knew (and her herself) were young, promising, and beautiful. This is probably one of my favorite songs from the album, and one of my favorite Lana Del Rey songs in general. The emotions it is trying to portray feel genuine, and the way it is composed and performed fit with the overall mood the lyrics create (solemn, sad, nostalgic). |

| Lana Del Rey – Money, Power, Glory Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| The way I see it, this song is about a woman who can be considered a black widow, an evil girlfriend, or an evil sugar baby. She doesn't care about love, she doesn't care about salvation; dope and diamonds are the only things that are important to her. She'll use and abuse any man to get those things, or as she puts it, 'take them for all that they've got'. The song begins with her talking about her current conquest, and his desires, contrasting his Godliness to her greed and obsession with power. Despite the fact that she ignores/fails the call (perhaps the call from God), she still believes that good things are waiting for her. | |
| Lana Del Rey – Brooklyn Baby Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
This song overall, in my opinion, is poking fun of/satirizing stereotypical Brooklyn hipsters. This isn't a problem for me, considering that I am not a Brooklyn hipster, or a hipster in general, and it's really not offensive or malicious in it's tone. Some might take offense, but the way I see it, they don't really see that this song is firmly tongue in cheek. "They say I'm too young to love you they say I don't know what I need They think I don't understand the freedom land of the seventies" This set of lyrics could be seen is two ways. 1. She's in love with an older man who thinks she's too young and naive 2. She says she likes a '70's artist and the people from that time tell her that she doesn't understand the music or what that time was like Personally, I think it's the latter, considering the context of the song. Also, lyrics like: "I sing Lou Reed" "My jazz collections rad" "I get down to beat poetry" "I get high on hydroponic weed" "I'm a Brooklyn Baby" Really drive the point home, to me, that she's singing about being a Brooklyn hipster. |

| Florence + the Machine – Heavy in Your Arms Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
I think this song is about the singer being abandoned by many of the men in her romantic life because they couldn't handle her and whatever baggage she carries. "I was a heavy heart to carry my beloved was weighed down" She's talking about how difficult it is to be with her, and how she was only dragging her lover down with her. "He took me to the river where he slowly let me drown" Her lover left her (let her drown), seemingly unable to handle her or her burdens. "I'm so heavy in your arms" She's lamenting over the fact that she's so seemingly difficult to love, and how no one can seem to hold onto her. "Are you strong enough to stand protecting both your heart and mine?" The question she is asking is, "Can you handle me?". Will you be able to stay, and not abandon me like so many others have? "This will be my last confession 'I love you' never felt like any blessing" This will be the last time she'll ever confess her love to someone, because being in love has never been something that brought happiness into her life. "Whisper it like it's a secret only to condemn the one who hears it with a heavy heart" She's so afraid that it's not going to work out that she can barely make the confession, as if telling them about her feelings is equal to condemning them to some cruel fate. "I was a heavy heart to carry but he never let me down When he held me in his arms my feet never touched the ground" She talked about making the confession, so as far as I can tell, the person she confessed to has accepted her. He, unlike the others, has been able to hold her and not give up on her. Beautiful song, and a great band! |

| Death Cab for Cutie – Your New Twin Sized Bed Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| When I listen to this song, I think of a man who's been waiting for love to come his way, but has now given up on finding them. The bed just serves as a simile for the place in his heart that he's left open for someone to come and use/inhabit with him. Now that he's dropped the notion of love, he's closed up that part of his heart, trading it out for a 'twin sized bed' for just himself. | |
| Eminem – Love The Way You Lie (feat. Rihanna) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I'm not really a fan of either artist (I do respect Eminem though, he's a talented guy) but I do like this song. It does what a lot of songs about domestic abuse do not, which is show the abuse in this relationship comes from both sides. Neither person in this situation can call themselves the victim, because they've both played a hand in what has happened between them. Usually, a song addressing this topic paints one particular person as the abuser, so it's nice to see someone take this in a different direction. Also, I don't think this song is justifying abuse as much as it's giving the listener some insight into what the singers relationship is like. It's painful, volatile, addicting, and destructive during the bad times, but passionate, loving, and supportive when things are good. Basically it's like a roller coaster. The assent it fun an exciting, but the drop is terrifying. Don't take this the wrong way though, these relationships are unhealthy and the people in them should part their ways as soon as they can to prevent any further (and sometimes irreversible) damage. It's an all around good song, and it's part 2 is not far behind... although I think Eminem's verse is the best part of that particular song. Cheer! | |
| Florence + the Machine – Howl Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
Personally, I think this song is about the deepest, darkest passions we as human beings can feel when we are madly in love. The relationship starts off all lovey dovey and sweet (It starts so soft and sweet), but as it progresses it becomes more passionate, obsessive, and fiery (turns them into hunters). The singer cannot bear to be without her lover, and will do whatever she has to do to be them. Love has metaphorically transformed into an animal (a wolf most obviously) that is rabid for the love of her partner and will hunt for him if he ever leaves, until she has him back. Another meaning I see is in the line, " A man who's pure of heart and says his prayers by night May still become a wolf when the autumn moon is bright" the meaning being that even good people who are "pure of heart" can become monsters if the setting is right. An excellent song coming from an excellent band. |

| Florence + the Machine – Drumming Song Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| It's not about sex. At it's most obvious it's about being attracted to /in love with a person, it's about how they affect you when they are in your presence. It's also about wanting to rid yourself of that attraction, but finding yourself unable to do so. | |
| Florence + the Machine – Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Oh God, here we go again, another bible thumper who thinks everyone who isn't a God fearing, good little Christian is automatically a satanist. I don't think Florence Welch would cover the song You've Got The Love (a song who lyrics are "I know my savior the lord is real") if she has sold her soul to your imaginary price of darkness. Nice job brainwashing your sister by the way, I'm sure you'll do just the same with your own children. Now go enjoy your Christian Rock while the rest of us live in reality. | |
| Halestorm – Love Bites (So Do I) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Really? I think of more as, "You threw this great guy away, and now I'm with him". In other words, you treated him like crap and now I'm here and I'll show him how 'love' should really feel. That's how I see it anyways. | |
| The Civil Wars – Girl with the Red Balloon Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| I think the songs basic meaning is about lost love. The girl was in love with this mystery man the song talks about, but somehow she lost him, and she loves him so much, that she'll never be able to fall in love again. Looking at it more deeply, it's also about how the girl doesn't even realize her own loss, or is chasing after something (the man/lost love) despite the fact that it's already gone. | |
| The Civil Wars – To Whom It May Concern Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| This song, to me, is about wanting to fall in love, and in turn, waiting for that special someone to finally come along. The Civil Wars make such amazing music, I can't wait for their next album! | |
