To be honest, like a lot of stones songs, it sounds like the author was stoned going to buy more dope.
Beautiful track.

i've read that gram actually wrote this song about his lil sister avis. toward the end of his life he is quoted somewhere as mentioning some of his songs being totally stolen, words are more like a gp song than stones song, jagger and richards are pretty vague when describing how they wrote this song

stones were crazy junkies especially in late 60s and wouldnt surprise me if, in exchange for being allowed to chill with them required gram to pay his due, though this was before exile

pretty esoteric, we'll never know and it doesnt matter

The Flying Burrito Brothers – Hippie Boy Lyrics 10 years ago
to me this song is about the loss of innocence and childhood...coming to age

a stereotypical hippie is spiritually attuned with a free mind, like an innocent child, before his mind is filled with societies crap.

there is also some tragic self awareness where Gram realizes that even though he is a hippie type at heart, he is very different from this character. gram is a grown up and can earn a dollar. this kid isn't addicted to money, sex, drugs, he seems pure.

the box represents money (now working to earn money), cruelty of the real world (this simple chore was more than he bargained for as he got lost), sex (box is a metaphor for vagina, which gram slyly mentions is beneath his arm), and its also a reference to drugs and sting operations (never carry more than you can eat). while the hippie boy might have been stoned on weed or lsd, non addictive ego shattering drugs, the box represents addictive egotistical drugs like opiates or speed and inevitable addiction that will take over his life, like sex and money.

er i mean "it compares the insanity of alcoholism and monotony of drinking every night with the insanity of love and sexuality"

The Flying Burrito Brothers – High Fashion Queen Lyrics 10 years ago
to me this song is about
breaking up with a girl and your mind is stuck on her. you try to have fun with your pals but when you get drunk and high its obvious to everyone where your mind is at. since you're still 'in love' with her everything reminds you of her. it compares the insanity of alcoholism and monotony of drinking every night with the insanity of being heartbroken. the dirt reference is ironically beautiful, keeping with the grimy bar imagery while alluding to the natural order of life. it goes on to say that being 'in love' is a purely feminine trait, narcissistic self pity is the only reason you're still fixated on her.

The Flying Burrito Brothers – Do Right Woman, Do Right Man Lyrics 10 years ago
not only is this song a great cover, its says a lot about human sexuality.

define masculinity as surpassing emotion to achieve goals, a sort of rational conscience, and define femininity is a passive narcissistic sexuality

the original Aretha Franklin version defines femininity and masculinity. The burrito's version says its masculine for a female to remain monogamous. it's also hilarious that when sung by a dude, the song becomes condescending and misogynistic.

for what it's worth: schizophrenics (the bearded lady disease) are rationally conscious with a passive narcissist sexuality. schizophrenics, having transcended ego, are on some next level of human and cosmic connectedness. and this is "Cosmic American Music"....

The Flying Burrito Brothers – Juanita Lyrics 11 years ago
"Juanita was the sister of Arlo Guthrie’s wife. She was a great gal. She was at the Troubadour, one of the watering holes we used to go to all the time. There was a house we were living at in the valley. At the time, she was exactly as the song says – we were down in the dumps. We both could relate to this loneliness: “Then an angel appeared, she was just 17.” I don’t think she was really 17."-chris hillman

keeping in tone with the album and the beatles' reference makes me think this song is a bit more existential...putting down people who try so hard. hippies or anyone who buys into something like that and tries to be 'something' instead

LCD Soundsystem – North American Scum Lyrics 12 years ago
if youve never been to nyc its quite the scene...

he means in terms of escaping from typical christian bipolarity (good vs evil), everything is black and white in our post modern society. 'native americans' had a totally different headspace and existed with their environment, they didnt always have to have the newest ipad.

the government preaches christian values (the best for controlling the masses!), 'ironically' run by the jews. the mind set of many people in nyc agree and live there to escape such. also despite having so many arrests for drug possession, there is a lot of ignoring the rampant drug uses among all groups. there are a lot of 'sinners' on the streets, its not the place you'd raise your good decent family despite it being a very safe place
