@[_whatallisnice:53089] True Dat. They spent s lot of time travelling around together. |

| Ani DiFranco – Joyful Girl Lyrics | 4 years ago |
|
A couple of things about this song. It was the final track on Dilate, which was an album that was made during a tumultuous break up Ani had with Andy Gilchrist (who she latter married) and most of the songs were dedicated to expressing her frustration with him. This final song was written for her mother, |

| Ani DiFranco – Glass House Lyrics | 4 years ago |
| The Glass House is a metaphor for living under the gaze of the media and the attention of fans and their expectations. | |
| Ani DiFranco – Alla This Lyrics | 4 years ago |
| @[RedLetterYear:37955] She spoke about this on one if her bootlegs and said the support the troops mantra was just a cover for what the politicians were doing. Like if an oil company was causing massive environmental damage they would be campaigning to support the office workers. | |
| Ani DiFranco – Alla This Lyrics | 4 years ago |
| @[k33psi3s:37954] Ani was pregnant at the time and to her the idea of a male creator seemed to be insane. | |
| Genesis – Harold The Barrel Lyrics | 6 years ago |
|
@[mcwryter:29884] It's a very English mother thing. Small boys were told to change their underpants "in case you got knocked down by a car" Therefore exposing the family to shame as a greater crisis than the traffic accident. |

| The Prodigy – Smack My Bitch Up Lyrics | 6 years ago |
|
Originally the term came from pimp or wanna be pimp slang. It meant I got shit to do or I need to get my shit together.. As in see you later... I gotta go smack my bitch up. In the sense of the song, it's getting your game on. Upping the level of whatever you are getting into. |

| Kate Bush – Them Heavy People Lyrics | 7 years ago |
|
When she wrote this song, Kate had spent a considerable amount of time immersed in the art of her musical talent. She had not yet produced any recordings but she spent about 2 years, just developing her unique style. At the same time she realized that she had somewhat neglected her intellectual development when she heard her brothers and her father discussing people like Gurdjieff that she references in this song. So it was her family that "open doorways" to "Them heavy people" "At an inconvienient time" |

| Ani DiFranco – Parameters Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
It really happened. Lock your back door idiot, was the message that an intruder brought home to her. She had grown from a nervous teenager aware of the big bad world into a confident 30+ woman her parameters had changed but their was still a big bad world she had grown careless about. Shis is thinking about what might of happened, what could happen the next time, any time, the consequences of her complacency. I don't see too much of fear as a subject in this, more like a heightened sense of awareness, that shouldn't have really gone away, has been awoken and it reminds her of how self preservation is literally a way of life. |

| Ani DiFranco – Studying Stones Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
This song was written a good time after her breakup with her husband. She had moved on, so perhaps her feelings about that are being submerged into the general soup of old emotions that just hang around without being resolved one way or the other. Things that tend to bring you down when your mind isn't otherwise occupied. Life goes on and you get into the everyday business of life, you get over things but sometimes they creep up on you and remind you that they didn't go away, you just filed them under BS. |

| Ani DiFranco – Untouchable Face Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| This whole album is on the same theme. The relationship with the guy she finally married in 1998. | |
| Ani DiFranco – Napoleon Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
Ani was still in high school in 87. She started her "record company" in 89. That consisted of producing her own cassette tapes and selling them at her shows and by mail order. The main clue to who this song is about is she said it was someone who participated on a panel with her and other artists about Art for profit. The rumour mill has pointed to Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam. |
|
| Jethro Tull – My God Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| That's interesting because the verse before is directed at The Church of England. | |
| Ani DiFranco – Crime for Crime Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| Rich people can and do literally get away with murder, but if you are poor and your trailer trash boyfriend decides to rob a gas station while you are driving, that's a joint venture you could die for if you can't find a good lawyer. | |
| Ani DiFranco – Asking Too Much Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
I loved the line "In other words I want someone who is not afraid of themselves" That's the way it would have to be. If you had a relationship with Ani, she's going to write songs about you, so you had better be prepared to hear them. |
|
| Ani DiFranco – Glass House Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
It's about others expecting her to live up to their image of her. Media/fans etc. Kamikaze missions... people throwing mud to in the hope it might stick or to provoke a reaction. Catastrophe on the lawn is a metaphorical press/fan base camped outside her house waiting for the next thing to make a noise about. Her inside maintaining a dignified silence because any other reaction is just more fuel to their fire. |

| Ani DiFranco – Napoleon Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
Actually Ani has confirmed that rumours that this song is about Susan Vega are untrue. Also that it's not about Tori Amos. There has been speculation that it may be about Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam The biggest clue she ever gave was that is was about someone who participated in a panel with her about art for profit. |
|
| Ani DiFranco – Napoleon Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| It's unlikely to be about Susan Vega because Ani was 14 years old when Susan Vega signed her first record contract. This song was written about 12 years later so it's more likely to be about someone who was a breaking act in the mid nineties. It might not be a big name because after all, they are getting shafted by their record company. | |
| Ani DiFranco – Shameless Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
"Covet another man's wife" is actually artistic license. She covets another woman's husband, the guy with the Untouchable Face who has Done Wrong and is Going Down while she Dilates from being a Superhero. Napoleon is someone else though. |

| Ani DiFranco – Letter to a John Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| You the song summed up the attitude of many of the strippers she met in New York. If I'm going to be abused by men I might as well get paid for it. | |
| Ani DiFranco – If He Tries Anything Lyrics | 11 years ago |
|
Damn, Shaun was one of her crew but he died of a brain tumor back in 2007. He was a great guy, he used to hand out the set lists at the end of the show. I always liked the girlie bff vibe to this song now it has another dimension. RIP Shaun |
|
| Ani DiFranco – Egos Like Hairdos Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I can totally imagine Ani stomping home from a gig and writing this overnight after someone "stood at the bar and talked through her songs" when she traded her spot with them. Then belting it out the next night. Her guitar is working overtime, teasing as if to say, you want the centre ring? you do a double somersault, I'll do a triple. | |
| Ani DiFranco – Anticipate Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| So essentially, record companies are a bitch! | |
| Ani DiFranco – As Is Lyrics | 11 years ago |
| I never heard that before. I always heard it was written about Andy Stochansky after he walked out before a tour.... But another Sarah song. | |
| The Jam – Down In The Tube Station At Midnight Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
You could be onto something, in the Seventies the tube closed much earlier but at midnight it would be around the time of the last train, hence more isolated. The thing is to can analyze stuff too much. For example if he was a city worker on his way home, he would in all probability have a season ticket and not have to buy a ticket. Also: Headlines of death and sorrow, they tell of tomorrow Madmen on the rampage. It filled my eyes, ears, nose and mouth It blocked all my senses Couldn't see, hear, speak any longer His last thought is of his wife's safety because they took his keys...(no explanation of how they would know his address though) but it does mean he has no thought of getting back anytime soon. |

Paul Weller wrote this song after contracting an STD. The dying spark You left your mark on me The promise of your kiss But with someone else |

| The Jam – The Bitterest Pill (I Ever Had to Swallow) Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| Paul Weller wrote this song after contracting an STD. | |
| Ani DiFranco – Swim Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| This is more about the break up of her band and going solo again. At the same time divorcing her husband who was also producing her recordings. | |
| Ani DiFranco – Paradigm Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| She's remarking that the grass roots of democracy is and has been in the hands of women as much as men. That people shouldn't feel detached from politics because politics is about attaching yourself to the community at ground level, not shutting yourself away in your own little condo. | |
| Ani DiFranco – Done Wrong Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| This entire album is an expression of her frustration with being the other woman in a married man's life and his refusal to stop juggling between the 2 of them. | |
| Ani DiFranco – Anticipate Lyrics | 12 years ago |
| This | |
| Ani DiFranco – 'Tis of Thee Lyrics | 12 years ago |

The poor man is a junkie on a poor man's vacation He feel like superman in his shiny red cape but even that is denied to him because the authorities want to clean up the town. |
|
| R.E.M. – Shiny Happy People Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
Just because the words came from a Chinese poster it does not follow that the song is literally about Tienanmen Square. Art isn't that fundamentalist. |
|
| The Postal Service – We Will Become Silhouettes Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
The lyrics say When our bodies go ..... bah bah bah. bang maybe? I don't think it's a metaphor for a relationship. I think it was written to sound like a soulful love song until you actually listened to the words. Paul Weller did something very similar with My Ever Changing Moods. |
|
| The Postal Service – Such Great Heights Lyrics | 12 years ago |
|
No one has mentioned how The Postal Service got their name and how it relates to this song. Ben and James would send each other material via "The Postal Service" and then work on it before sending the results back...... I tried my best to leave This all on your machine But the persistent beat It sounded thin upon listening And that frankly will not fly You will hear the shrillest highs And lowest lows with the windows down When this is guiding you home. So there is a parallel story of the song and the creation of the song and of the oneness of the characters in the song and the creators and the narrative tells you how The Postal Service came to be as a sub text. The line about the radio reminds me of a guy I knew who's father was a very well know ballad singer in France. They had fallen out with each other and hadn't spoken for years, when he heard his dad's new song on the radio and realized he was singing about him and asking him to leave their issues behind and have a reconciliation. |
