I'd also like to add my thoughts on this one. It's obviously about a guy who is still recovering from a breakup, but I interpret the lyrics to mean that while he still loves her and wants nobody else to have her, he has decided not to be with her anymore because he is too proud to do so after whatever happened to cause them to break up. Maybe she cheated, or mistreated him in other ways and his sense of self esteem will not let that person back into his life - no matter how strong his feelings are, I would say that the trust is gone - he hates it, but he can't change it. He's stuck between a rock and a hard place. He doesn't want her back for what she's done but he also wishes that things were different and they were still together. Maybe he can forgive but can't forget. He still sees her as his girlfriend, and the new man in her life is stepping on his 'territory.' He can't win, and the only way he can get over it is to keep everything at arms length. He still wants to kill him though, right in front of his ex - but I don't think he intends to go through with it - I take the song as one of those letters that are never sent. He wants her to know his thoughts, he wants HIM to know too, but instead he's keeping his distance and living in silent anguish, the only comfort being his fantasy about beating her boyfriend to death with a brick. |

| no, this isn't the greatest song in the world, and isn't the type of music i'd normally listen to in a million years, but sometimes in life you end up in situations where songs like "Fuck It" are exactly what you need. its a catharsis, its someone else expressing almost word for word how you're feeling, so you can directly relate it to your own situation. its always good to know that there are others who know how you feel and are right there on your side - I couldn't care less if its a marketing ploy to get as many swear words into a song as possible, but without the swearing it would lose impact anyway. its not a good song, the lyrics are lousy, but that doesn't matter here. | |

| it's nothing to do with feminism or 'patriarchy' its about trying to move on from a broken relationship without having one's emotions dredged up by ex who did the breaking. believe it or not, this happens to both men and women, but then feminists don't tend to focus on men's issues.. | |

Pretty much what has already been said - she's been on the receiving end of a painful break up and is trying to move on, but her progress keeps being hampered by the sporadic return of her ex - who has already chosen to end the relationship but is now facing doubts about the decision and wants to test the water again, with no regard to the emotional toll it is taking on a former partner who has already told him to stay away so she can start to forget about him. She knows from experience that he doesn't 'really' want things to work, but he's feeling lonely again and is looking to fill the time - he's not concerned with the pain he's likely to cause and is only doing it for himself. Which is why she knows he doesn't give a shit and why, along with the fact that she is still harbouring feelings that are largely unrequited, she is no longer able to have that person as part of her life. I'm not usually a fan of Fiona's but I've been through a similar situation and this one nails it. Good stuff. |
