| Gordon Lightfoot – Rainy Day People Lyrics

I heard this song one night, when I was laying in bed it came on. I pictured a bunch of different people huddled together in different places on a rainy day. Listening to it again, and reading the lyrics I believe the song is talking about people you can count on. They're the kind of people that have had so many problems in their life, that they understand the average person who is down on his luck. ``Rainy day'' is a metaphor for describing the type of people they are, just everyday people who have faced hard times and don't expect much out of life. The kind of person you could find at a diner or bus stop, who will share their personal experiences. |

| The Mamas & the Papas – California Dreamin' Lyrics

I think most of us know what the song is talking about, the character in the song longing for sunny California during a harsh winter day. We can picture one of the Mamas and Papas walking down a sidewalk in a desolated park, a church is nearby ( abandoned, except for the preacher inside), leafs blowing in the wind. You feel cold, just hearing the song. This song for me, being a fan of animated films and musicals, has the perfect melody for a villain song. I mean listen to ``YOU KNOW the preacher likes the CO-old...Prea..cher likes the cold.'' John Philips has such an edgy, devil-may-care vibe in that line, it sounds as if he is Snively Whiplash plotting a scheme. Of course, what really makes it feel like a perfect villain song is the final chorus at the end, ``...On such a winters day''. Michelle and Mama Cass really project at the ``Dream-ing'' part, and it really makes the song all the more climactic by the time the song ends. I know it sounds silly, that I think this is a villain song, but the melody really ranks up there with some of the best Disney songs I've heard. |

| The Beach Boys – God Only Knows Lyrics

I love this song! One of my mother's favorites from the Beach Boys. Beautiful melody and beautiful harmonies. I think the meaning behind the lyrics is what life would be like for this certain guy without a certain girl. One of the Beach Boys, we as the listeners can decide which one, God only knows ;D, who is the main character in the song. The character is basically saying ``Lord knows what life would be like for me if you leave, so if that happens, I just don't think I could be quite the same again.'' It's such an innocent song, I don't think we would assume he killed himself or anything, but we know how attached this guy is to this one particular girl. So if she left him, he would move on, but he probably won't love again the same way he did before. It's so blissfully happy and cheerful, that even though the song may seem melancholy, you can't help but feel optimistic that the character is still going to continue this wonderful relationship. |

I love this song so much! What makes it so sad and effective is the mood and the lyrics of the song. It is definitely a break-up or relationship gone bad kind of song, but it can mean so many other things to a lot of people. One movie I always seem to visualize when I hear this song is ``Fox and the Hound''. You know the scene where Tod is abandoned and left out in the woods and has to find somewhere to call his home. That whole scene perfectly captures the feeling of this song. The lyric ``Now I need a place to hide away'', really drives home how lonely the character in the song feels. When I mean character, it could be any of us. You have to imagine yourself as the one singing the song, to really get an idea of where the artist is coming from. The violins also really add a layer of sadness and makes the song all the more melancholy. Such a beautiful song, and the way Paul sings with such sincerity and tragedy, makes the song all the more poignant. |
