Could be about materialism. I've noticed materialism as a reoccurring theme in some other songs such as surprise surprise. The song starts out by stating his material possessions; House, Garage, Sedan. American ideology has given him the impression that he needs to buy these things and is promised that if he works hard enough he can make it to the top of the social latter "was promised to be king when he was old." After the crash he realized he's spent 20 years of his life focusing on gathering material possessions and "Bought the only dream that he was sold." Now he wants to burn the evidence of his existence and all his possessions because materialism and possessions "Pull my spirit down." "Ever feel like you've been cheated following what they believe in" is a reference to him conforming to the american ideology and social norms that have put him in this position. "THERE'S NO MORE TIME TO WAIST!" |

I think that's an over generalization of the song. I agree its a great few lines but I think this songs speaks to his disconent with the way the world is. Hence the referance to turning off the TV and stuggling the justification of living this way. He goes on to say that he refuses to include himself in a system "society" as he sees it that is morally and fundamentally defective. He questions who is it that writes our history. He's alluding to some ideas in 1984 from George Orwell where the past is rewritten to the benefit of the leaders. The basis of this statement is that our history reflects missery and is deconstructive. Rather he says we should focus on hope for the future and he sees this as being powerful enough to overcome our the nonconstructive character of our "adjusted history." Now the focus is on keeping an open mind, but that we fail to speak our minds. He has his own beliefs which don't conform to societies and feels the weight of this on top of him. |
