I think the song is about what separates real love from the earlier stages of excitement and sexuality. Things start out very new and fun, but what really lies behind that is not always certain. So, in this song, Ferry phrases the move from one state to the other as an important moment of learning about himself and the other person. By the end of the song, maybe he has learned something. I don't think the song is a sad one, though. I think that what the speaker is getting at is that, while we can lose track of it at times, love is the only thing there is. You can get in your own way with ego, self-defensiveness, judgement etc. but in the end, there is nothing more important than the love you share with someone. I think he is asking the implied audience to tell him one thing in the world that is really more important than the love they have; the answer is that there isn't anything. This is a very complex song but it is an absolutely beautiful one as well. |

I agree with the geopolitical reading offered below, but also feel that the song works on a personal, psychological level as well. It is told from the point of view of a man whose life is successful but also very settled and even a bit stifling at times. They have parties, they are doing well, but little seems to change and there is a tendency for things to get boring, almost on auto-pilot. The song suggests that you have to work hard to keep your life ever-changing like the gardens of Avalon, and that it is important to notice and act on the spontaneous and beautiful things around you when they come up. If we get too caught up in control, we lose our ability to allow our lives to go in exciting, new directions. I really love this song. |
