| My interpretation is that the narrator and the subject used to be in a relationship, and this song begins after a time of not speaking as he’s calling to see what’s new in her life. The two were previously in a relationship that ended with hurt feelings on both sides, and though they care about each other, the narrator is trying to move on with his life. I think with the ups and downs of a breakup, the subject might at times lash out (you berate) but the narrator reminds her of times she professed she still loved him (remember your ailing heart and your criminal eyes), and again emphasizes that it’s hard to move on. They might have tried reconciling (you tested your mettle of doe’s skin and petals) but the magic is gone. | |

I believe in the second verse, the line is "Let me STAND, I am leaving". In the last verse, the third line is "your hard-hearted ocean to cry" |
