Plus in the song the music gets more and more intense as he goes "Waited on the thunder!" and then BOOM! climax of the song.
Then right after he quietly sings the part about waking up to the sound of thunder. |

I think the thunder is the height of life. You can tell by all of his songs that his young life was the best time of his life. It can also relate to a climax, probably a little bit of both. Either way, "the sound of thunder" makes a lot of sense... |

You listen to any of Bob's greatest songs and it's him reminiscing about the past... (Like a rock, Mainstreet, Night moves), however i find it really inspiring. Im 17 years old and what Bob has taught me is to live and experience as much as you can, so when you become older you can look back and say "Damn, those were the days" |

| Eddie Vedder – Guaranteed Lyrics

In response to a few questions about the three minute silence in the middle of the song, I personally believe that it is because Vedder wants to have the listener think in depth about everything he has sang about, or just to listen to the natural surroundings. It seems like when people are listening to music, they are automatically biased in their decisions based upon the music they are listening to. Vedder's song is created to open up a persons mind and help them see what it is that they are truly living for, and during the silence it helps them realize.
Again, this is just what I think because it is what happened to me while listening to it. Then Vedder starts up again just playing the guitar and humming, which doesn't distract the listener with lyrics.
Just a thought. It is a fact though that that silence is no accident. |
