This song is about being in love with a woman and recognizing your place in a relationship, simply acknowledging that your relationship is bigger than yourself and that you are better off with her in your life. "I am good, I am grounded. Davy says that I look taller. I keep feeling smaller and smaller." What I hear is that he is better off with her in his life, he is more grounded with her in his life. He looks taller because he is more confident, standing a bit straighter and walking tall. He has a new sense of confidence about himself. He is feeling smaller and smaller because the universe no longer revolved around him, he is not the only person in his world and is re assessing his place among his surroundings. "Remember when you lost your shit and drove your car into the garden. And you got out and said I'm sorry to the vines and no one saw it." This is his example of how contentious she really is, that no matter if anyone is watching she will do the right thing. She does not put on a show for others, rather she is sincere and follows her conscience. Though we call make mistakes, she does not build her self image based upon what others think of her, she can be incredibly independent. "I’m under the gun again, I know I was the 45% of then, but I was a lot of things." In saying he’s under the gun, he experiences some insecurity about being tied down to a relationship, but knowing that before he was in a relationship he was less than half the man he is now, he was 45% of the man he is now. He then also goes on to say that he was a lot of things, which references everything you had to give up for your relationship. In some ways as a guy you feel as though you sacrificed all of your “guy time”, but also recognize what you have gained as well. "There are some things you should never, laugh about in front of family. In a week we’ll be together, Ill try to call you when I’ve landed." My reading of these lyrics is not to laugh at your significant other when others tell jokes at their expense, is just undermines your credibility and integrity. Always remember how important they are to you. The final lyric is some prophetic advice of a person in love, they cant wait to get together and he plans on calling as soon as he lands. |

They played a set at Cochella this year and it was much more clear what he was saying. I've updated the lyrics with the verse. I watched about 20 live performances before I was convinced I had it right. The band does however seem to change from "Could You back me up" to "Would you Back me up" from time to time. In this Cochella show they used "Would you back me up". http://youtu.be/rBwtNzTnFoA |
