All Right! I know several Counting Crows fans want to know what it really means. Here is the answer as I have listened carefully with the understanding through lots of time I spent on the road. Maria is not real. This story takes place in Memphis, TN about a lonely man and his search for something to keep him from being lonely. She is a spirit of what this man wants to imagine as his perfect girlfriend that has issues, and lots of them. The issues come from what the man is looking at in Memphis, TN and the Delta. There are many churches in Memphis and the girl wants him to take a shot at singing on Beale street to become a singer like Elvis did. He takes all of his feelings and places it into Maria who is tired of trying and just ready to jump off one of the buildings instead of being rejected. I can only figure this out by the mystery live lyrics which he asks,"Why are the girls so hungry?" and "Why are the boys so lonely?" You have to understand that in Memphis they stay up very late due to tourists, yet you jump on stage to keep them from waiting to hear your song. |
