I love how you explained it!! It reminded me of my ex since he liked to tell people I was gf yet he never talked to me but liked to have me around out of convenience. I heard this song shortly after we broke up and it made me cry lol |

I don't think the first lines should be taken literally. I think she is on the inside and everyone knows her but like she says, "Just because you know my name doesn't mean you know my game." Although she has all these people surrounding her it's all very surreal so that's why she is on the outside observing the fun. She feels like she doesn't belong in this crowd and that they all just use each other, that's why she says, "I'm good at protecting what they want to take." She struggles with wether it's better to be alone or surrounded by people that don't really know her. It's like the whole first part of the song is about the people she used to hangout with but was tired of the farce and couldn't pretend any longer.
It's like when you don't want to be that loner so you just hangout with random people but you feel like you're on the outside even though they call your name because you don't know what to say. Is it better to be alone or pretend like your having fun?
I love this song and I really identify with it even if I've misinterpreted it lol |

I didn't know that and it makes me love the song even more!!! Even though it's pretty upbeat sounding it's about how she no longer wants to be played so she wears her heart on her cheek now. That line carries so much more meaning to me now, thanks for sharing!!! |

I come to this chat room to see how other people interpret the song. I get the same thing out of the song as you did but I don't find the song "cute" either. I think we all have different life experiences which affects how we perceive things. By no means is anyone that takes this song as cute "f'd up". I think it's insensitive for you to say so since you don't know them. I realize this reply is a couple years later and you might not see it...but I wanted to say that art is meant to be interpreted differently. How bland would it be if we all thought the same way? |
