It directly quotes The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells. That's what it's about.
The book deals with a group of experimented on animals. The scientist wants them to be as human as possible and enforces this through laws (Walk on two legs, no spill blood). If the animals break the laws they are further experimented on (House of Pain). It's a great book. |

Well, the album itself seems to have a theme of reality vs. fantasy, and this song seems to go along with that. To me it seems to be about the romantic fantasy of captaining a ship on the sea, and how appealing it seems to someone who's never been a hero. |

It's fairly straight forward, the whole album uses animals and other country-type to make observations about the world and humans. This song is literally about a weathercock, performing its simple job and pointing the way to better days. One can just imagine exiting a farm, looking up at the iron rooster, and wondering whether it is the weather controlling the cock, or the other way round. |

This song is from the opera "The Medium" and acts as a lullaby for the character's mother, who is having a meltdown. However, the lyrics are about a woman whos lover has drowned, leaving her unmarried with his unborn child. |

This song is about a man who loves a woman so much, even though she keeps trying to change him. He is desperate to feel wanted. Listen to how he switches between "I'm so over you" and "Just tell me you need me". It is denial perfectly represented.
Unfortunately, I don't think Craig realizes this. |

He's talking to everyone. His whole life he tried to get people to like him but they never did. He was actually bullied so badly in school that he went mute for about a year. Now he's older and basically saying "I don't know why you don't just like me for who I am. I could've been anything for you, but I always had to be something different." |

I think the phrases about the right arm are not about masturbation, but referring to jerking someone else off (in this case the "she" of money/greed). The lyrics sounds like the person is still in bed with "her" at that time.
Also, I originally thought this was about the falsity that many sexual gay relationships can bring (two women using their right arms). That seemed to also be implied in Missing (found something sweet on the island with the daughters of Eve/but through thick and thin they've gone away and only left their grief).
This is NOT SAYING IT'S HOMOPHOBIC, but a lot of homosexual relationships (especially in the young) are together because of sexual reasons or for wanting attention. And often the sex is not what they really wanted afterall (as you sin with it you wanna cut it off) but they can't get out they're too insecure or just like the sexual feelings too much (but instead you thank God for the wrong you do).
Seeing the other comments, I do like the idea that money is being compared to lust (her/she being money). I didn't understand the spoken quote before that. It's definitely not about self injury. I don't know where people got that. |
