Jack's Mannequin – Hammers And Strings (A Lullaby) Lyrics 12 years ago
STANZA I (Beginning to "one thousand American towns")

Andy is thinking in musical terms, his work is taking over his conscience.

STANZA II ("And my friend" to this old "piano")

One of Andy's old friends calls him, he is eager to listen to what she has to say, perhaps to spark inspiration for his music

STANZA III ("She says" to "Just the keys that you touch")

Andy's friend admits that she misses him as well. She wants him to write her a song, to touch her heart, and help her through missing him

CHORUS

Andy's friend is having trouble sleeping, and having problems with herself, especially at night when her thoughts are most alive, thus giving her "nowhere to hide"

STANZA IV ("These hammers and strings" to "American towns")

Similar to Stanza I. Andrew cannot escape a song, or a melody.

STANZA V ("And my friend" to "taking them still")

This is perhaps my favorite stanza. Andy's friend calls him with the news after a visit to the doctors. I believe she was diagnosed with depression, which many people misunderstand, and label as "crazy." The friend knows she isn't crazy, she's just tired, and has no motivation. She's questioning why she still cares

CHORUS

Same as first time

END

Overall, Andrew wrote this for his depressed friend to help her through the night, letting her know that he is always there. It is truly, a lullaby.

This song was written and recorded before Andrew found out he had leukemia. He was diagnosed the day this album, Everything in Transit, was completed.
