Mumford & Sons – Broken Crown Lyrics 12 years ago
To start with there are many great thoughts already posted here! Im going to give my opinion as well as i think it bring something new to the discussion.

Im not sure of the entire meaning of the song but here are some things I find interesting.

The pull on my flesh was just too strong
It stifled the choice and the air in my lungs
Better not to breathe than to breathe a lie
'Cause when I open my body I breathe a lie

In this part I think the author reveals he is in love with person tempting him. Open my body could signify to open ones heart and clearly he has lied about who he loves out of some reason.

So hold my hand
Consign me not to darkness

The author asks for help and not to be forced in to doing something sinful.

So crawl on my belly 'til the sun goes down
I'll never wear your broken crown

These two lines are confusing to me. To crawl on ones belly most likely meas to lie like the snake in genesis, see the quotes. But this would signify he lies so that he wont have to ware the broken crown. This is puzzling to me. I guess it could be that he rather lies than to conduct in something sinful. I could be wrong though.

Here are some quotes from the bible that seam relevant in connection to this song.

Sin is not ended by multiplying words,
but the prudent hold their tongues.

So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this,

“Cursed are you above all livestock
and all wild animals!
You will crawl on your belly
and you will eat dust
all the days of your life.

I hope some one finds my insights useful in interpreting the song.
