| Suzanne Vega – Tom's Diner Lyrics | 12 years ago |

This song just reminds me of distance. How an apparently innocuous conversation, can impact your life. For example, no one in this song actually properly interacts with the narrator, but thy all in someway effect her mood. The owner of the cafe, or a barista, doesn't fill up her coffee all the way, and then promptly ignores her before she has time to protest, putting the narrator in an annoyed mood. Or the women who was straightening her stockings. Looking inside Does she see me? No she does not Really see me How Suzanne reflects on how everyone in the diner is "seeing her", but not really knowing her. And the narrator continues being lonely in their own world, and reminiscing about a lost love, while everyone in the diner keeps on being involved in their own little worlds |

It's a pretty easy song to interpret but here is my reasoning... Give me a second I, I need to get my story straight The narrator is trying to tell his ex-girlfriend, or whatever, how he's sorry and wants to get back together but he can't get the words out right. You want to say something but you're so tongue-tied and nervous, it's impossible. My friends are in the bathroom getting higher than the Empire State My lover she's waiting for me just across the bar My seat's been taken by some sunglasses asking about a scar, and His friends have left to get high, he's by himself, and all this false bravado he's shown about talking to his ex has left, and now he's just a pair of sunglasses. I know I gave it to you months ago I know you're trying to forget She's trying to forget all he's taken and all he's given, hate, regret, loss of innocence, etc. She wants to live a new life. But between the drinks and subtle things The holes in my apologies, you know I'm trying hard to take it back He says he sorry, but he makes contradicting statements and the statement is not quite clicking, but inside all of this he's still sorry. Now I know that I'm not All that you got, I guess that I, I just thought Maybe we could find new ways to fall apart The narrator knows that he isn't all that he was, when they were dating, but maybe they could start dating again, and try to date again, even they're bound to fail. Sometimes you've got to make a mistake, to know it's a mistake. Tonight, we are young So let's set the world on fire They're young thy can make all the mistakes they want, let's try and make something big! Let's make sure we leave our mark. We can burn brighter than the sun If they get back together, nothing is impossible. The world is on my side I have no reason to run So will someone come and carry me home tonight It feels like everyone is on his side, there is no reason for him to run away from love. So will his love interest, maybe they're not meant to work out, but he tried his best, or anyone carry him home. He's exhausted, he's poured out his heart, and he just wants to go home. |

I think the song is about an ex-girlfriend, who is doing well with her life, and the narrator envies her. I appreciate your help to date Although I'm grateful, I'm jealous of you He likes how she's trying to help him, but all he wants is to have her idyllic life. And I wish upon a shooting star That I might end up where you are Will you wish too? Two wishes are better than one, dude He wishes to end up in her situation, where she's got everything figured out. And deep down she's tired of trying to help him, and he knows that, so she is going to wish he tries to help himself. |
