Joan Baez – Donna Donna Lyrics 5 years ago
@[PisH87:35048] Joan certainly did not write this originally. It is a translation of a Yiddish song.

Joan Baez – Diamonds and Rust Lyrics 5 years ago
@[vphi:35047] I'm pretty sure that "the girl on the half-shell" refers to the image in Botticelli's painting "The Birth of Venus". She is saying that she was, or would have been, both mother (Madonna) and lover (Venus) to him. I think.

Joan Baez – Diamonds and Rust Lyrics 5 years ago
@[mamsel:35046] But isn't she dredging up those memories by writing and performing this song? This was one of two songs about Dylan on the same album, the other being "Winds of the Old Days".

Joan Baez – To Bobby Lyrics 5 years ago
@[midnight_listener:35043] Dylan did really care - at first. Then he came to the conclusion that doing so was a mistake, and he wrote "My Back Pages" to say so.

Mountain – For Yasgur's Farm Lyrics 7 years ago
@[Wrd2255:28633] The song BECAME a tribute to Woodstock when they renamed it "For Yasgur's Farm". The thing is, they played it AT Woodstock, so that couldn't have been its original intent. It must have had some other name when they performed it AT Yasgur's Farm, or maybe they simply hadn't given it a definite name yet.

The Mamas & the Papas – It Never Rains In California Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is not by the Mamas and the Papas. It is by a man named Albert Hammond and was released in 1972, long after the Mamas and the Papas had broken up (at least for the first time). They did have a brief reunion in 1971 that lasted into 1972, so it is conceivable that they performed this song somewhere during their reunion, but I can find no indication of that. It is not on any of their records.

Neil Young – A Man Needs A Maid Lyrics 12 years ago
It seems to be built around a pun on the double meaning of "maid". A maid is someone who cleans your house, etc. But it is also a general term for an unmarried woman, "a young maid". My impression of the song was always that he hires someone to be his maid, and then falls in love with her. They are then a couple, "a man and a maid" in the other sense of "maid".

However, Neil Young has said that the song was about his relationship with Carrie Snodgrass, the actress. It has a line about how he "fell in love with the actress" while watching a movie, and she is apparently the actress in question. How that fits with hiring a maid, I don't know.
