| Billy Bragg – Greetings To The New Brunette Lyrics | 11 years ago |

As posted before I think the song is about a young couple with some background differences (anyone knowing a bit of Billy Bragg might know he is not much of a church guy, hence the line "people from YOUR church agree..."). It starts with them moving together, enjoying eachother's company. I don't think though, they think about pregnancy and alcohol but about a future together - children- while having a beer (the same way he mocks around her national football team skills). Things get uglier with time and their differences come patent (she goes to the church while he steals cars ...) and they have arguments - mentinoning family, I love this bit. Nevertheless, they are in love and they pass through it and he wishes a future besides her. Until I read it here I didn't have thought that this greetings to the new brunette was about a newborn but it makes a lot of sense. A very beautiful song for sure. |

I remember having read that all the song was built around the "artificial shooting star" thing, based on an actual event that happened to our beloved Billy. I've listened to a few versions of this song and I still prefer the raw version from worker's playtime album much more than those more elaborated ones (including the acoustic with Kirsty McCall and the extra - and to me, unnecessary- lyrics). It gives the song a more agressive touch, as it is indeed a song of anger: anger about fake things (fake shooting stars), anger about still be thinking about an old love. He'd wish to stop thinking about her and looking for a new love. About "I don't feel bad..." He feels embarrased of telling her he is still in love with her, not with the fact itself. That's the meaning to me... |

I agree on the below thought of a former relationship. To me the song starts with them as a couple, then it comes the black cloud: she telling him she has been unfaithful - the tempation of breaking things...- As they walk and talk he realizes the situation so they break up even when she tries to reverse it, frantically, and THEN (not "them") arguing that "virtue never tested is no virtue at all"... Then it's "her version", talking of how different their lives would have been if they had gone somewhere else - or chased their dreams, in a way... They eventually split up and later, they turn around when they see each other, although he still dreams of them being lovers. I find this song specially touching, and there's that one verse I'm particullary fond of, "most important decisions in life are made between two people in bed". Beautiful. |
