The National – John's Star Lyrics 12 years ago
Like kobajagi, I too see the distinct Beatles and Stones references at the beginning, but the rest leads me to believe that was just the beginning of their realization of incompatibility.

Many couples tend to have this fantasy that they are perfect for each other, and once that starts to descinegrate, it can never be recovered. As can be seen in the lines:

Once ruined, baby, you stay ruined
Yeah, once ruined, baby, you stay ruined

Realizing that a person you thought you had a great connection with isn't really who you think they are can be devastating. I just think this song has more to do with than just a couple who disagree about music.

Bastille – Pompeii Lyrics 12 years ago
Thanks. It means a lot that someone found a similar meaning in this song. It became my anthem at a low point in my life. It made me more determined to not drag myself down and stop anyone else who wanted to do it, too.

When I hear this song, I think of someone realizing that they are in a cycle that never seems to end.

Evidence of the cycle:
And if you close your eyes,
Does it almost feel like
You've been here before?
How am I gonna be an optimist about this?

Things always seem bleak. "People" are always saying things will be get better, but do they really? The use of Pompeii allows for brilliant imagery of a place constantly crumbling down, and I think that this represents the character of the song. He is taking note of the fact that while things might actually be different, it is the same dreariness over and over again. Life is hard. For most people, it is a struggle. The character then has to question how is he supposed to be optimistic when nothing is actually going to get better.

Later is says:

Oh where do we begin?
The rubble or our sins?

I believe that this is a question of who is actually to blame. The people/society around us (the rubble) or ourselves (our sins). Who is actually making us unhappy in this life that we are living? With the ever increasing percentage of people who are diagnosed with depression is it because of society's influence or is it just human nature?

As usual, my own personal experience has affected the way I interpret it.
