Amon Amarth – Cry of The Black Birds Lyrics 12 years ago
To me, this song is a modern example of a time-honored Viking tradition: Battle poetry. It's a religious thing, as dying in battle was the most honorable way to die in a viking's mind, they often would sing or recite poetry in the heat of combat to raise morale and encourage themselves to not fear death. The blackbirds/ravens that the Norse were familiar with were a symbol of death, and furthermore, Odin himself was a god of death, and was often prayed to prior to and during battle. The symbolism of ravens and blackbirds as messengers of death comes from the fact that after battles are finished, the crows and ravens come to feast on the dead, and the Norse observed this. This song is about what all death metal is about: Death.
