Bob Dylan – Mr. Tambourine Man Lyrics 9 years ago
This song is about death. Mr. Tambourine Man is Dylan's personification of the figure, similar to the Grim Reaper. He uses sleep as a euphemism for death. Almost all the lyrics are about death in some way. I like another writer's interpretation of "my own parade" as your funeral. The singer is in the process of accepting death.

Jim Croce – Lover's Cross Lyrics 11 years ago
Croce has always had a very lovely way with word. Like his song "One Less Set of Footsteps" this song has experiences that we all know worded so differently that you normally hear it. You can hear it in his music, it all comes from his heart.

Back to this song specifically, not too difficult to understand the meaning, but damn it is audible chocolate. It's amazing how calm the lyrics are, it's kind of like the calm after the storm. After all these days, weeks, heck months of fighting he has finally become so tired of it that he isn't even angry at her for wanting to change him, he's just done with her. He even says:

"Still I hope you can find another who can take what I could not."

He's clearly moved on, and only wants what's best for her. Adding to this theory is how sweet and harmonious the melody is. Not that that's unusual for Croce songs, but it isn't sad really, despite the fact that it's a tad on the slow side. The song is full of chords that you've probably heard in happier songs, and I think that's symbolic of Croce's optimism for the future, for both him and his ex lover. When he says "bridges are meant for burning." I'm reminded of the quote "May the bridges I burn light the way."

Eh, just some personal connections I've made. If you're reading this, I'm glad you enjoy this song as much as I do.

You're right, it is slightly creepy in a way. Haha, I think that's part of the reason I like it so much.

Makes sense. First valid interpretation I've heard. Very chill song though, don't think it has a super deep meaning.

Blitzen Trapper – Black River Killer Lyrics 12 years ago
I know this song is probably about someone wrongly accused, but I like thinking it's about an actual killer. Has that eerie melody, and the way he talks about the murders so unapologetically makes it sound sociopathic to me. I dont know, just my take. I like it anyhow.

Paul Simon – Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes Lyrics 12 years ago
I'd like to add my thoughts to this conversation. I think this song is both difficult and easy to find meaning in. I mean this, in that as in all songs that tell a story there's a very superficial meaning that you can get just by speaking the language, but for me, there was also a second deeper meaning. Here's what I believe.

In the beginning of the song, diamonds on the soles of her shoes refers to her as rich. Someone who has wealth and shows it prominently. And then there's the line that resonates throughout the entire song.

Well that's one way to lose these
Walking blues

As a rich person, of course life is much easier for you. People respect and admire rich people, even some who are rich purely by chance. But then as the song goes on, diamonds aren't referring to physical/monetary wealth anymore. They refer to leading a fulfilled life, and finding love.

Wearing diamonds on the soles of their shoes

That line, boom, that's the transition that I just described. And by the end of the song, he's saying something about both meanings with the "walking blues" line.

Paramore – Anklebiters Lyrics 12 years ago
Anklebiters mean someone that's less than you, like a little kid or an annoying little peppy dog. Someone that's bothersome, but not really a problem, because they're so small. To me at least, the word has a connotation of someone who considers themself grandiose, but in the end they're just petty and annoying. Which, is a lot of people, especially those who want to project their own views of what things should be like onto others.

Jim Croce – I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song Lyrics 12 years ago
I think a lot of song writers, and even just people who have trouble clearing their mind can relate to this song. Perhaps that's why Jim is such an amazing song writer. Everything he writes seems so perfect, and maybe that's because song writer was his only outlet for creativity. His voice is so perfectly soft.

Paul Simon – Diamonds On the Soles of Her Shoes Lyrics 12 years ago
Teaspoon is a metaphor for cocaine? I don't really think there's enough evidence for that. It's an interesting idea, but I think JForsythe62's explanation makes more sense. The entire song is about love, and imbalance. So what's more likely, that this is metaphor for him being over eager and her showing milder interest, or that she's offering him cocaine? I'd need at the very least an interview with Paul Simon about the song to verify.

It was interesting to read your interpretation, almost everything you said I believed before I read it, so it was interesting to hear someone explain something exactly the way I understood it.

Jim Croce – I Got A Name Lyrics 12 years ago
And I carry it with me and I sing it loud;
If it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud.

This is seriously one of my favorite lyrics from any song ever. I think it's about Croce's choice to be a song writer, even though he might not be successful. Regardless of what it's about, I love this song.

Starfucker – Death as a Fetish Lyrics 12 years ago
I recently read an interview with Starfucker, about how the whole album of Reptilians is about death. Alan Watts talks about death throughout the entire album, but this song is definitely where those opinions about death are most prevalent. Reptilians was written after Josh Hodges grandmother died, and you can tell it's a lot less light and boisterous than their previous albums. Polyvinyl described Death as a Fetish as "the title becomes a liberating mantra sung over an immediately hummable keyboard-driven loop."

Death as a Fetish is about exactly that, liberating. If I had to choose one song to represent Reptilians, this would be it. It's an entire album about death, but it's not sad. It's upbeat. Listen to what Watts is saying on the album, death is responsible for giving life meaning and purpose. This song takes that to an extreme, it's about how death is needed. The title isn't referring to a sexual fetish, look at the first definition of a fetish in the dictionary: a strong and unusual need or desire for something.

Everyone, and everything perishes. This song is Hodges' acceptance of that. It's beautiful really. Suffering is caused by desire, and when we cease to desire to live for ever, we stop suffering when we don't.

Dr. Dog – That Old Black Hole Lyrics 12 years ago
Dr. Dog easily has some of the most cryptic lyrics of any band that I know. What is great however, is that you can have a completely different interpretation of the lyrics from what they actually mean. Personally, I have no idea what the lyrics truly mean. But for me, this song is about something that's bothering you very deeply. The lyrics "Take this thorn from my side, fix this chip on my shoulder." Kind of hint at that. However, this thing that's bothering you is impossible to fix. But I feel like this song is about accepting that. The lyric "It's just another kind of light." Is really powerful in that aspect. Saying dark isn't the opposite of light, it's just a different kind. I think that's about changing your opinion on something that you are afraid of to a more positive idea. Really poetic song.

The Replacements – Bastards Of Young Lyrics 12 years ago
I don't need to rehash everything everyone has says, if you read their comments you will understand what the song actually means. I just want to interpret it. While I wasn't part of the generation that this song is referring to, it still feels personal to me. Maybe that's part of the reason it's such a good song. I think it's about more than just being a generation with no war like WW1, WW2, or Vietnam. It's about not needing one. While the lyrics of this song are slightly melancholy, I think it's rebelling against those past generations. I think it's a positive song. In short, to me the lyrics aren't saying "We don't have anything." more like "We don't need anything."

Dr. Dog – Where'd All the Time Go? Lyrics 12 years ago
With this song, and most of Dr. Dog's songs, the lyrics are loaded with meaning, and I think that allows a lot of varying interpretations. To me this song is like a happy nostalgic song. It's about remembering good times, but it isn't wistful. It's about just remembering that those times were enjoyable, and they changed us. The lyrics mention a girl, and I think that's something that is personal to the lyricist , but I like this song, even if I don't fully understand it. That's the beauty of Dr. Dog. Loads of meaning, and a great melody.

Neutral Milk Hotel – In the Aeroplane Over the Sea Lyrics 12 years ago
Maybe this song is about Anne Frank, but I think it's at the very least more about her attitude than her life. This song is about, the simplicity of life. As so many songs make life complex, I think this song is the antithesis to that.

But it's also about how everything is very ephemeral. Nothing lasts forever, but it's not a sad realization. It's a live in the moment realization. I'd really hate to over complicate this analysis, so I'll just end it by saying that this song always makes me feel better when I'm down, even though it's really not the most "happy" song.

The Shins – New Slang Lyrics 12 years ago
New slang when you notice the stripes, the dirt in your fries.

To me, that line has always been about how people treat you differently when they notice something about you. The stripes is probably referring to nationality, or maybe just the personality of a person. The dirt in your fries, it's something that ruins it for you. So, basically it's saying, "You talk to other people differently when you know more about them." and sometimes, knowing more about them ruins it for you. Just, me.

Hey, yeah the video is all about album covers. There are album covers from like, Sonic Youth and Cat Power and Slint. I think it's The Shins way of saying how they got their inspiration.

Dr. Dog – The Breeze Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this song is about taking time to relax now and then and enjoy the ephemeral nature of life. As in, taking things less seriously and just having a good time for the sake of having a good time. The first few lines:

Are you moving much too fast?
And the good times that just don't last
If you're always on the go
Make an angel in the snow
And freeze

Show this especially for me, like a snow angel is a really idyllic thing that most people who are "always on the go" wouldn't have time for. But then the next stanza is the exact opposite, it's about people who are constantly bored and don't have much to do. AKA "If nothing ever moves, put that needle to the groove." Obviously that's referring to a turn table, and just listening to music, which, haha anyone who enjoys music can relate to. And a lot of this song is about contradictions, as in the next stanza.

Is it a dream keeping you awake?
Is it the stillness that makes you shake?
If you need to know for sure
What's on the ocean's floor
You'll sink

A dream keeping you awake, stillness making you shake? I think these are about feeling out of place, or that something isn't right. Like, stillness wouldn't make a normal person shake, but it's saying does it make YOU shake. The next lines, are sort of a joke about always needing to be right or wanting to be certain all the time. It says "you'll sink" as in, it'll be your downfall, you'll fail with that attitude. The next few lines are the most powerful for me.

Do you like things the way they seem?
Or are you looking behind the scenes?
Well, if you've gotta know
What it takes to make it so
Just believe

I love these, because it has such a message. "Do you like things the way they seem?" is all about people accepting things that they don't truly know about. That's why it says the way they seem, and then it says "Or are you looking, behind the scenes?" or, do you really know the true motives of things going on, and then in response you don't like them. I think the rest is a lot more cryptic and personal, so I'll leave it at that. Amazing song, so much meaning and really poetic. Dr. Dog is awesome!
