To start off, great song in my opinion. I think the lyrics go a little like this (or just what they mean to me). The lyrics go "You and I know I had to leave Under harbour lights," which obviously means, that it was well known that the person had to leave, and this took place under the light posts in a harbor (harbor, however you want to spell it). "That you were my rock, never my stepping stone" is a way of saying that you were my single and only love, and never just another lover in my life. "I held my tongue, I turn on my heels I couldn't look back" saying that not all that was wish to be said had been said. Some things were felt that weren't shared with the other person, and then they left hastily, never looking back. "We both know I cannot come home", the lovers know that one of them cannot return to their prior place, wether it be an actual location or a place in the other lovers heart. "The water rose faster than I could run, Oh my load has bruised my grieving bones" The water rising faster meaning that the person was caught in the other lover's love, not being able to escape. And the load being all that love that the runaway lover never said, and has now been carrying all that unexpressed love around with them, causing them to grieve over the lost love. "Forgive my sins for I haven't found God, And I don't know when I can trust my heart". Forgive me for all the wrong I've done, for I don't know how to do right, and know I can't trust my heart. "But you were my rock, never my stepping stone", the runaway lover realizes that the other love was the one and only, not just another person met along the way of the runaway lovers life. "She said 'I'll be your rock when the water comes, don't waste your life on stepping stones'". The other lover told the runaway lover that they'd always be there for the runaway lover, and to not live an unfulfilled life without a one, true, actual lover. "You were never a stepping stone". The runaway lover realizes that the other lover was their one and only. |
