Black Sabbath – Black Sabbath Lyrics 10 years ago
I've read Geezer Butler's story about, prior to writing this song, seeing a strange black figure at the end of his bed one night, during a period when he was experimenting with black magic or the occult or satanism or maybe all three. I guess Geezer felt that this was some sort of sign that he was in trouble and it caused him to write this song.

Yes Black Sabbath I guess can take credit for popularizing "doom songs". I was commenting earlier on two earlier "doom songs" that likely influenced Sabbath and other bands. "Fire" by Arthur Brown and "Race with the Devil" by The Gun, though I admit Black Sabbath are in a different league.

Gun – Race With the Devil Lyrics 10 years ago
I pair this song with "Fire" by Arthur Brown as early examples of "doom" songs, which very likely influenced heavy metal songs with themes hell, the devil, damnation etc.

Like "Fire" I think the song is an early example of a "scare-thrill", though to be frank it almost comes off as heavy metal gospel preaching. Wouldn't surprise me if this song has been covered by religious rock groups.

Along with "Race With the Devil" by Gun (released the same year), "Fire" will have influenced a lot of other "doom" songs by heavy metal bands. The "God of Hellfire" is presumably influenced by Christian hell and the Devil. I think like a lot of heavy metal, the song is supposed to provide a bit of a "scare-thrill" with all the talk about burning people with hellfire, but like people have said, the verses indicate the song is about people who are living in dream worlds, thinking they're going to live forever etc. I guess it's rather violent though of course it's perfectly true that everybody's possessions eventually wear away along with their lives.

Judas Priest – Exciter Lyrics 10 years ago
Yes, I like the comments about this being a new standard for speed metal. It's another song in the metal tradition of songs about the "Something-er"...like "Sinner", "Grinder","Steeler","Jawbreaker", "Painkiller" etc.. While the "Exciter" seems to be another creation of their's, partly based on religious concepts like salvation, repentance etc. I think the song is also about themselves i.e the excitement they provide with their songs, live shows etc. "Repent for your past musical sins and listen to some REAL music!!". lol

Judas Priest – Sinner Lyrics 10 years ago
I guess there is quite a bit of evidence that the song is about Crowley. Because of the '70s style chugging rhythm I assumed the "Sinner" was a motorbike rider. I more or less a assumed he was character that Judas Priest created like "Exciter", "Steeler", "Painkiller" and others. Based on religious tradition of course.

Rob, like a lot of metal singers, sings as though he's warning everyone of some impending doom though at the same time you can hear the fun in his voice. I have to ask, are preachers in church any less entertainers when they stand on a stage yelling about hell and sin?

Metallica – For Whom The Bell Tolls Lyrics 10 years ago
As far the song's title is concerned....
I think the bell being referred to in the original usage of the expression, "for whom the bell tolls" was a church bell used to announce or honor someone's death. So the one for who the bell tolls is someone who's just died.

I'm not sure what "For whom the bell tolls, time marches on" implies. Except that people keep on dying i.e in wars.

Judas Priest – Saints In Hell Lyrics 10 years ago
I'm not sure what this song is based on besides Christian hell and saints. What is the bell they refer to? Is it something to do with "For Whom the Bell Tolls"?.
I've read of the idea called the "Harrowing of Hell"(or "Descent of Christ into Hell") where Jesus is supposed to have gone into hell for the 3 days in between his death and resurrection, which is part of some Christian writings not included in the New Testament. But I think the song is probably based around it's ironic title. The irony of saints being in hell.

The Cars – Drive Lyrics 10 years ago
The video caused me to think the song is about a mentally ill woman that Ric want's to get help i.e "You can't go on thinking nothing's wrong". I think a lot of the lyrics suggest that the person he is singing to has problems of some kind, but isn't addressing them.

The Alan Parsons Project – I'd Rather Be Man Lyrics 12 years ago
I've always been an admirer of this song and I don't really agree with that analysis

I think Alan should have had a woman sing this song. The song would have had a much greater meaning, if it was from the point of view of a woman who, disillusioned with womankind, declares that she would rather be a man. The singer's attitude in fact reflects that of women I have met who prefer to associate with men and pursue male interests.

The line "Blame it on the apple, but you don't fool me" is the most telling verse for me. It suggests that people (both men and women) have used the story of Eve and the apple to determine woman's role in society as temptresses and deceivers. Men have used the story to belittle women and women have used the story to excuse themselves when they tempt and deceive. Also using words like "slave" and "crawl" to describe the women in the song, suggest that the role they willingly play, is demeaning and that they disrespect themselves and "sin their souls".
