@[Dressed2Depress:3535] she´s almost certainly employed as a cleaner in the church, hence her picking up the rice. Of course she also does it for the reasons you suggest as well. But this also explains why she dies in the church |

The heart burns figuratively - i.e. either you follow your heart and lose your soul or keep your soul but break your heart. It seems to be echoing the impossible choice to be made in ´Something must break´.
The love triangle in Touching from a Distance / Control has always reminded me of Heart of the Matter by Graham Greene |

I always thought : ´You take my place in the show down... etc´ is a reference to the fact that he won´t be around for the crisis himself i.e. he´ll be dead.
What I love about Joy Division lyrics is that it isn´t possible to break down the meaning line by line - it can mean all sorts of things but you basically get the message. |

| PJ Harvey – Pocket Knife Lyrics

I agree the knife could represent self-defence/independence or a willlingness to kill or take her own life to avoid being tied down. It also occurred to me that the song might even be about a girl being forced into marriage due to pregnancy, in which case, the knife might indicate that she would rather have an abortion |
