This reminds me of when I was younger, and a friend of mine kept urging me to show my genitals to him. I did, and he showed me his and that was that. It was visual bodily reciprocation - a search for the quelling of insecurity, I guess. It's as though my story is the innocent, childhood version, and this narrative is the adult one. Where sexuality moves from curious to demanding, to abusive, voyeuristic desire. It's about using bodies. |

I love this song. I love how art is figured in it. The Joy Division tape becomes emblematic of a closeness, an empathy, which tears through time. Reciprocation fails in this song, that is the tragedy. |

I think the song is about AIDS. The call of a stranger, in this cynical but still realistic view, leads to heartbreak but in this case: 'but you won't be here tomorrow', the echoed vocals of 'tomorrow' suggesting an omniscience, an inevitable prophecy. Imbued, perhaps with rage and vengence, the victim denies themself empathy for others: 'but you are hurting everyone you touch'. In this interpretation the song brings attention to the harsh reality of many AIDS victims, and provides a fable for the unlasting solace of revenge. |
