The National – Sea of Love Lyrics 12 years ago
I have to agree that I think the song is about someone who is simply not committed in their relationship, and doesn't really love the other. The narrator is the person who does not want to take the "next step," to advance their relationship, the one who doesn't want to fall into the "Sea of Love." They really emphasize the "Hey Jo, sorry I hurt you, but they say love is a virtue don't they?" in the bridge, just to point out the difficulty of breaking up with someone, and to find an excuse, in this case, the purposefully very weak "love is virtue" excuse. They repeat it to emphasize how much it hurts the other lover in the relationship, how dismissive it is.

I'm really interested in "What did Harvard teach you?" part. My guess is that it's narrator meeting with the person they dumped after a few years, and they've advanced farther without the narrator, ending with an ultimate feeling of regret, and shame.

Just my two cents.

The National – Conversation 16 Lyrics 12 years ago
I'd say it's about being misunderstood. Someone with social anxiety and has difficulty actually enjoying socialization, yet craves. S/he wears a mask when being with friends and pretends to enjoy it, but really dreads it, but they also very lonely.

Basically, s/he need someone more intimate to talk and relate to, and their friend and/or boy/girlfriend doesn't fill the gap. The song is about not being able to talk about what's been bugging you, because the social scene does not allow it, and just wants you to pretend to be happy, but you're still being eaten from inside and unable to talk to anyone about it.

The National – Fake Empire Lyrics 12 years ago
I've always felt that this song is about ignorance and denial. People half-realize what's wrong with the wold, the faults that they even encourage by supporting abusive corporations, governments, etc, but they choose to ignore it and just party and act as though everything is great. It refers to modern developed nations like the US, Canada, or most of Western Europe of course, where you have the luxury of pretending like everything is perfect.

The National – All the Wine Lyrics 12 years ago
I'm a bit torn by two meanings:

One is simply alcohol. The guy thinks he's great because he's smashed, and can't tell what the hell is going on, but just sees himself as an awesome dude and the center of attention.

The second meaning would be a melancholy perfect town/setting/person. Kind of a fake suburban society. With words like "dollhouse", "safe sleeping upstairs", I kinda get the feeling of a friendly, homogenized, sanitary society. This person is perfect, in a creepy way. No hardships to write and talk about.

Arcade Fire – Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) Lyrics 12 years ago
The way I see it, it's using the '98 power outage as a metaphor for keeping children in the dark. Funeral was almost all about youth, so I would think this would go along with the trend. It's saying you can't hid the world's problems or issue from the kids, they can't function if they are kept in the dark. "They light" is simply a view into the world. The newer generation need to know what's going on, basically.
