As an extension, I can relate this song to my current situation. My girlfriend and I are middle-class, average looking people. There are couples I know who are "perfect" looking with rich families. No matter how much we try, we could never be like them. So yeah, "we're going down". |

I used to think this was a bleak song, but now I think it's bittersweet. The original title of the song was "The Perfects". I think it's about someone who has finally accepted that he will never be the best at anything. He's becoming a better person each day, but he will never be as good as "The Perfects" - whether it be looks, money, social status, career, etc. You could even extend it to a couple who are trying to keep up with the joneses but realise it's not worth it because they'll never live up to them. But they're ok with that. |
