Sugar – A Good Idea Lyrics 1 year ago
I can't believe how many stupid comments there are on here suggesting its a Pixies rip off. Not only is the bass line not in the same key as Debaser, the progression of notes is completely different. It's even more insulting because it was Husker Du and Bob Mould who was a huge influence on the Pixies and Frank Black not vice versa. Frank Black would have been graduating high school and beginning college when Husker Du was at their peak, the influence is impossible to ignore. Not just the Pixies either, I challenge you to show me a late 80s thru 90s rock band who wasn't influenced by Husker Du.

That said, Sugar recorded this AFTER the Pixies recorded Doolittle and he opened for them several times so it's certainly possible it was a subtle influence for him when writing Copper Blue but musically the two riffs are not the same at all, sorry.

As to the lyrics, it's classic Bob Mould dark humor, it's a love song but a a chilling one. She wants to be drowned, she thinks it's a 'good idea' . I think both the lovers are mentally unstable, it's almost like a love death pact that they have. A creepy song.

The Smiths – How Soon Is Now? Lyrics 1 year ago
JFC you people are thick...what is with the current generation and the need to define EVERYTHING in terms of your gender identity and sexuality? Get over yourselves, literally no one cares. So many of the 'interpretations' here are absurd projection on the part of the writer and have nothing to do with Morrisey or the Smiths.

If you know anything about Morrisey he is a) asexual - for the most part he doesn't like sex and b) by his OWN WORDS he is a 'humasexual', he is attracted to humans - so bisexual if you insist I guess, but the fact that he specifically did not choose that term is telling IMO. He's dated men and women but again, remember he doesn't like sex, these are predominantly emotional relationships for him, not sexual.

So now why the actual F would he write a whole catalog of songs about homosexuality when he's neither sexual nor gay? He wouldn't and he didn't. His songs are intentionally ambiguous, the subject of this or that song could be anybody, male/female/other and the subject could be attracted to anyone. He has specifically said that this was intentional, he wanted the song to appeal to everyone without him making up the listener's mind on who/what specifically it was about. Do we not all know sadness and misery? Have we not all felt unloved or unnoticed? Have we not all laughed at a ridiculous situation? He's a very witty and clever song writer with a slightly twisted sense of humor, that's what Smiths songs are all about, the songs are not intended to be autobiographical, the lone exception I think being 'Bigmouth Strikes Again' which he describes himself to a T.

Now that all said and out of the way Morrisey and the Smiths were a strong counter reaction to the cock rock/hair metal that was going on at the same time so their music attracted those who were outcasts...socially awkward, closeted gay, nerdy theater/art/music kids, these are the people that gravitated to bands like the Smiths because so much of their work speaks to that feeling of being on the outside looking in, being unsure of yourself, being mocked/teased, even beaten up. You want to find the meaning in any given Smiths song, look to that.

Jawbreaker – Boxcar Lyrics 8 years ago
You see this happen with every iteration of the punk scene (with any scene really). There will always be bands somewhat on the fringes, one foot in the genre and one foot in something else...that's Jawbreaker in a nutshell. Definitely a punk-driven band but with a lot of other cool influences too. In this song Blake is singing about how they don't quite fit into that scene at the time but also mocking the fact that people in that scene had ll these rules and requirements to qualify as 'punk' (which is the exact opposite of what it's supposed to represent). This would have been 1993 they were writing this album so that would be when bands like Rancid were getting big...and what does Rancid look like? The full 'punk rock' uniform, the bondage pants, the boots, the mohawks, etc etc

enjoifreedumbo does a really good job of breaking down the lyrics, just to add to what he posted, I'll tackle verse 2:

Got a friend, her name is Boxcar [weird nickname but most are]
Cigarettes and beer in El Sob [he hangs out with her in El Sobrante (north of Bay Area) drinking and smoking]
Her hair was blue, now it's green [she changes her hair color frequently]
I like her mind, she hates the scene [this chick gets it, she understands that punk is an attitude, not a fashion]

Bad Religion – Robin Hood in Reverse Lyrics 12 years ago
first of all, great song, and a very 'signature' Bad Religion song

I think travymurdron has most of the key themes laid out pretty well. I'd just like to add the following:

the passage that goes:

"When the kids are united they can never be divided
But that was yesterday
There's a brand new sham to today"

is more a nod to the past and clever wordplay more than anything...the first line is a famous lyric from a Sham 69 song. and then of course he notes that it is (unfortunately) not THAT kinda sham today that we face today

the part that goes:

"Let's say we try to get this right
Said the plutocrat to Jesus Christ
And when the old fox fearing the worst
Made his entrance in a hearse
Then the nine in black robes all went berserk
This is a tale of robin hood in reverse"

the first two lines he is echoing/reinforcing the sentiment from verse one...a plutocrat is one who obtains political power thru sheer wealth...it could well be a refernece to Mitt Romney or simply a more general comment on how horribly twisted and intertwined religion, politics and money have become in American politics. The 'old fox' I dunno, I thought of Rupert Murdoch (Fox News creator/owner and a corrupt piece of shit) but that might be a reach. The '9 in black' are the supreme court and the robin hood reference is obvious (but very apt) I think. Great song
