| I think the song is in essence about wanting a second chance - having lost faith and lost love, having had every step thats led to this point turn out to be a bad decision - the writer feels they are on a downward spiral, a damn slippery slope if you will. I think she is asking for a do-over because she can't see how to fix it, she's got no options left and so is "going down the stoney end". She'd love nothing more than to be a baby in her mothers arms again - there would be no worries for her and her mother would take care of her once more, giving her a chance to do it all over and get it right this time. Thats how I interpret the song anyway... | |

I interpret it as a story about a couple, he's been working hard to make things better for them, (line about hustling for 10 years to wipe away sins and sweat), just when he thinks things are on the up, he discovers she has been making a fool of him or doing something bad. (you burned it away/ you lied all the time/ you lied every night/ hard heart). As a result he's furious and leaves her (I lit a fire that wouldn't go out until it consumed the walls and roof of this house). She burned it away but he started the fire, its her fault but he did the leaving, I believe anyway, I could be running the wrong way with this! In the end after the whole thing with the work and then all the anger has left him cynical and worn out (all washed out/ lost so much blood in the falling out/ suffer the rain). He's never going back to her again (reference that youself lazy :P) he's making some sarcastic remarks aimed at her (dont you take it so hard and baby, dont you cry) it was her fault, (cross your hard heart and hope to die) could mean 'your cold and your promises of change aren't worth a damn' And the description of her is fairly straightforward, she looks good but she's bad, she seduced some potentially innocent bystander (monroe hips, poisoned lips and knives) Like I said I may be miles out from what the actual meaning is, but thats how I see it :) |
