A story about dreams, deceit and realization. "Every time you touch her sets your hands on fire," Hands on fire has two meanings to me; One would be to become highly aroused with desire of the woman touched, and the other would be the completely opposite; to get burned, as in rejected or become struck by a sudden pain. "And everything you've got is all that she requires." Again a line with a double suggestion to me; One would be that "you" possesses all the qualities needed to fulfill all her expectations or needs she would ever have in a man. In another way, the line may suggest that the woman in question, is a kind of woman that will suck any man dry for whatever he got, may it be of material, emotional or spiritual value to her. “And you hang on, hang on, hang on to the words of a liar.” And here comes the turning line that makes it clear which of the two different meanings the previous lines have; “You” have been hanging on to a hope that she has been true to the words that gave you the impression that this was a woman that sincerely wanted to share a love and truly appreciated your presence, but the last line “the words of a liar”, reveals at least to the audience/ reader that the woman has not been speaking truthfully, and that there has been little else to ”hang on to”, or in other words; support, the existence of the relationship. Plot twist; It is not perfectly clear that the words of a liar belongs to the woman, although it is safe to assume so, since all previous lines speaks of “you” and “her”, logically the same rules apply for this line. But I would suggest that there could be, intentionally or unintentionally, a deeper understanding in looking at the option that the real liar is the singer, or “you” himself, who through inexperience fooled himself and created this impression for himself, misinterpreting either the woman’s words, or simply dreamed up a fantasy image of this woman, even though an experienced individual could have seen the red flags, and the cracks of the facade from far away. “You can feel it’s getting down to the wire.” In any case, “you” notice that this fantasy-image is slowly fading, to a point of realization that there will demand a serious turnaround of the apparent evidence that this relationship are crumbling at its very fundaments, or it will snap at the wire, and come to a natural end. “All the hurt you thought was gone has now returned” I would guess “the hurt” in question is the feelings of abandonment, mistrust, loneliness, lack of love and the like, that was before meeting this woman, and now returning while still in the relationship. And it is exampled by the next line; “And everything she's laughing at is all you learned.” It does not feel much like a loving togetherness anymore when the woman your with are belittling and ignoring your knowledge, experience and pleads to be heard or respected. A man can only take this kind of behavior for so long before; “And you let go, let go, let go, 'cause you know you're getting tired. Can you feel it getting down to the wire?” Fine, OK, the future to this relationship seems pretty doomed. But wait; what have we learned through this experience? “Take the time to close your eyes and look around,” -Reflect on the situation and the experience a little bit. “'Cause anyone who helped you out can let you down.” She’s not the first and only person you have met that seemed to be nice and loving and kind and all, only to use you one way or the other, and eventually prove herself as a big fat fake liar and manipulator, is she? “And look out, look out, look out, the voice is now the choir.” When you think about it, how many of your friends and acquaintances are really your friends when it comes down to your needs and wishes? There are many people around telling little lies and making appearances, although perhaps not in such a in-your-face way as the female character in the story, but they are “singing the same story (the voice is now the choir)” so to speak. “Can you feel it getting down to the wire?” Finally, you can interpret this in a negative or positive way; -Either it is back to start, you end up lonelier than before it all started, or; +After all, a bad experience may turn out to a good realization and wisdom in age. Perhaps it is time to recognize and separate true intentions from fake opportunism, and cut some leaches from the personal sphere, and go on in life without the encumbrance. The story marks a new level of consciousness propelled by a tough love. A hard, but eventually an important lesson. |

| The Bluestars – Social End Product Lyrics | 7 years ago |
| Straight forward expression both lyrically and musically of the anti-establishment. As punk as it gets, before the label of angry young men became a term of musical expression in the line of this song. A great song with a lot of power to blow off some steam to whenever I find myself in the mental position of grief and depression whenever I think of the lack of proper knowledge and humanity that is the trademark of modern exclusive in-or-out society. | |

@[Lennonforever:26450] I think it would be safe to assume that the "it" is the music, as you say, but it can also be the fire itself. What he says is basically; "Just as standing on fire forces or compels you to move, so does music. Standing still in both fire and music would be painful". And implied in the word "intends", "it" serves a purpose. Sorry for the 11 year delay of the answer, by now you might have found another interpretation. :) |

| Donovan – Universal Soldier Lyrics | 12 years ago |

This is a song that pinpoints one of Human Beings biggest paradoxes, the misconception of peace through warfare. It is the sole reason why war exists at all. It may be inspired by the Vietnam war, but it is not about it, the lyrics are as universal as the soldiers. Here is my analyze. He's five foot-two, and he's six feet-four, He fights with missiles and with spears. He's all of thirty-one, and he's only seventeen, (He comes in all shapes, sizes and ages, and he utilize any kind of lethal weaponry) He's been a soldier for a thousand years. (He has the same mentality as any soldier before or after him) He's a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain, A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew. (He has any kind of religious background) And he knows he shouldn't kill, And he knows he always will, (And even though his religion forbids him to kill, he is determined to do so anyway because he deem it necessary to do so) Kill you for me my friend and me for you. (Because of his conviction, that it is a matter of kill, or be killed, for the sake of the survival of his own people) And he's fighting for Canada, He's fighting for France, He's fighting for the USA, And he's fighting for the Russians, And he's fighting for Japan, (It is the same man that is on both sides of the borders, killing each other) And he thinks we'll put an end to war this way. (But he thinks that the man on the other side of the border is different than himself, and that by eliminating the other side, there will be no need to fight, when the truth is that they can both stop fighting before anybody is hurt in the first place) And he's fighting for Democracy, He's fighting for the Reds, (He is convinced that his government is superior to the other forms of social systems, and is willing to force his system on other people through force) He says it's for the peace of all. (This line show the paradox of governments claiming they have a peaceful system, but who still are willing to invade other nations to install their "peace" against their will.) He's the one who must decide, Who's to live and who's to die, (He is the one that makes the final decision whether another man is friend or foe, before he is using his weapon. This line makes it clear to the listener the absurdness in the reality that someone (especially a soldier) has the authority to make the decision whether someone should live or die) And he never sees the writing on the wall. ("The writing on the wall" is a term that simply means; the message/ understanding that is plain to see, that everybody should be able to understand, even without anyone saying so. In the context of the text, it refers to the absurdness of killing another human being, the message of their religions, their own common sense, the repeated warfare through ages, which never leads to peace, but death and destruction, and we all know that is true. Still, the universal soldier is someone who completely manages to ignore it) But without him, How would Hitler have condemned him at Labau? Without him Caesar would have stood alone, (We often blame the wars and deaths on those who gives the orders, or the instigators of war, and leaders of people, but they alone cannot do much, without the help and support of the people.) He's the one who gives his body As a weapon of the war, (He is even willing to sacrifice himself for his leaders, who are sitting somewhere safe and playing mad war games with the soldiers on their maps) And without him all this killing can't go on. He's the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame, (It is the army, not the generals that expose a big threat and are the real responsible for the calamity of war. If the soldiers refused to follow this madness, it would never escalated to war) His orders come from far away no more, (If a soldier would really listen to these lyrics, he would maybe realize that he himself is responsible for war, by going into it and following commands of his leaders, but he would know that in the end, it is he himself that makes his decisions, nobody else. It is the poets wish, that this song may bring this enlightenment to the soldiers, so that they can take the right decision, and refuse to fight for another) They come from here and there and you and me, (Orders come from everywhere, do you do what everybody tells you to? Or how do you know which to follow? This line is there to make the listener aware that it is not possible to follow all orders that people throw around themselves. In the end, everybody has to use their minds and intuition and realize for themselves what is right, and if people listened more to themselves than others, they would be better guided, and not miss-used and confused) And brothers can't you see, This is not the way we put an end to war. (And if you use your intuition, and search within yourself, and use the information you posses, is it not completely clear that what we all want is peace, and that it cannot ever be accomplished by killing people with a different belief/ system/ history/ culture? Not to mention the very paradox of flagging the peaceflag in one hand, and carrying a weapon in the other. |
