It sounds like she is realizing she is in a bad relationship and that the problem in the relationship is her. Her love had no choice but to release her as they were not good for one another. She could not let the relationship go, so now she is downing in the misery of the break up. Her love had to let her go, to drown, or they both would have... I usually give a perspective and allow people to piece it together themselves, but I could give a breakdown if someone wants it... :) |

| The bird is her conscience and the song is her own confession. She found that by trying to hide her crimes she adding to her crimes (lying) and that they were a burden. Constant worry about the secrets getting out. She also realizes the more she tries to cover up the crimes the harder it is to cover them (there are too many lies getting too thick and becoming less plausible). Eventually she confesses, seeming involuntarily confessing, potentially realizing the only way to be free of the burden of the crimes is to confess. | |

The singing and swimming are the feeling of elation, utter joy, such as found by being in love with someone or a singer singing or being buzzed (drunk or punch-drunk). But after a moment of elation are one must return to their usual state, often followed by a feeling of loss or depression (sinking, drowning). A bit like being addicted to a person as if they were a drug, but that analogy is used too often in modern culture, so this is a more artistic way of looking at it. Learning to get over that loss and looking forward to creating positivity in your own life restore a life to a happier state of normal and allow moments of elation in remembrance of the initial joy. This is akin to overcoming a drug addiction, but in the song it is an addiction to a person. |

| I see how you could get that, but the analogy is disjointed on a couple levels... i.e. "not to step on a crack" seems to refer to the saying "step on a crack break your mother's back... But interesting perspective, it speaks more about you personally than the song. | |

A lot of people look at this from a very sexist standpoint. There is no man mentioned in this song at all. It is true art, left open to interpretation by the listener, but there are 2 main points of view... 1. being dumped by the "girl with one eye" 2. being dumped because of the "girl with one eye" She told me not to step on the cracks ...Making fun of the singer's age? I told her not to fuss and relax ...Shut up! Pretty little face stopped me in my tracks ...Not innocent, this one is trouble. But now she sleeps with one eye open ...She'll learn. That's the price she'll pay ...not to mess with me & my emotions. I took a knife and cut out her eye ...I tried to see things from her perspective I took it home and watched it wither and die ...It was too painful Well, she's lucky that I didn't slip her a smile ...I should've slit her throat.
