| That seems like a spot on interpretation. I only heard of Engerica last year, long after they split up. Shame they did spilt so soon given how great There Are No Happy Endings was. | |
| Engerica – Did You Hear What Sylvia Said Lyrics | 12 years ago |

I think that this is a song about rejection. The man is absolutely sick of being rejected by Sylvia and probably by people in general and he is taking revenge on her. I'm tired of crying and despising and everything that I see I tried to meet you but it's always the same No use good for nothing man you should be ashamed In this verse, he mentions that he has tried to get with Sylvia and he says he's tired of despising everything that he sees. This could be his own self as well as perhaps that Sylvia has become a target of his hate because he couldn't have her. I couldn't help it I turned around The deed was done now I can't find my way out No point resisting when the pull is so strong Just keep so quiet cause your silence speaks for everyone I'm thinking that perhaps he is talking about kidnapping and raping her. He couldn't resist having his way with her. He mentions the deed being done and there being no way out. This could be of his miserable life or he's saying that he's raped Sylvia and that's it. For no good reason, for no good cause I had to leave you, had to leave you where I left the car If you walk, if you walk anyway With one guy for one girl Shhhhh The way he's mentioned about her being left where he left the car again suggests that he has kidnapped her. The "shhh" i perhaps him telling his desperate victim to be quiet. There is a girl ugly as me Wait til you see her, you will not believe Tied her in ribbons, left her for hours Sylvia please go take a shower Here he is projecting his hatred onto Sylvia and is trying to make her feel as low and bad as her rejection has made him feel. This continues in the next two verses. ALL! HAIL! QUEEN OF THE GUILTY! Here he's pinning the blame firmly on Sylvia. I can't help but think he's also trying to make out that perhaps had she not rejected him, Sylvia would not have to be punished for it. I interpret this song as being a song about a very unstable man sick of rejection who finally snaps over his object of obsession. |
