I've been hooked on this song as well since I first heard it in late January. My thought is that it's about renewal through destruction. Tidal waves, pale horses... but the singer is riding them rather than being killed. To the point, he rides these things through the streets where he once went looking for love; he's older now and not given to the same infatuations of youth, in which case the tidal wave might represent the destructive but necessary changes involved with growing up. The song sounds bittersweet rather than despairing, as if he's saying goodbye to some phase of his life while hopeful for whatever's coming next. |
