This is isn't a simple song. Bruce isn't just pining after some girl like some pop song. Consider the context of his life at the time and the message of the whole Tunnel of Love album. I believe that when he says he "ain't got you" that he's talking about his wife at the time. He's got her (she's his wife) but he hasn't really got her, she hasn't fully opened up to him and he's lost his connection with her. Similar to the message in Brilliant Disguise - "Is that you baby, or just a brilliant disguise?". Ain't got you, means that he hasn't truly got her/she's not being completely true to herself when she's with him. |

| Bruce Springsteen – Darkness on the Edge of Town Lyrics

Jungleland ended Born to Run fairly somberly, but it still had a romance about it. This ending has no such thing. The character isn't dead but any faith he once had certainly is. He's become a bitter man. The temptations of the bad things in life (the things which are found in the DOTEOT) got the better of him and he gave up everything he had in the process. This song is an omission of all of the mistakes he has made. He recognises he's guilty and that he will have to pay for that, hence why he will be on time. He's not going to run anymore. He accepts his place in the darkness where he now resides and in a sense he is OK with that.
Its interesting to wonder that because he names Sonny by name, if this is the same character from Racing in the Street. The opening line about them still racing down in the Trestles lends itself to this argument. The fact that her blood never burned in her veins follows on from the idea that she was never fulfilled by racing like he was. She was with that dude in the Camaro but she was just with him for the ride, she ended up with our guy because she fancied it, and she didn't really care for his racing as she sat contemplating out on the proch, politely asking her partner if "he made it ok?". So maybe this is the same guy from Racing. |

| Bruce Springsteen – Stolen Car Lyrics

It makes sense to me that the "stolen car" is a metaphor for a woman that the protagonist is having an affair with. He's waiting to get caught so that he can end the lie. The "restlessness" he experienced was his desire for other woman and he hoped this would disappear as his relationship grew deeper, but it never did and now he's left driving that stolen car. |
